•The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 11th at 6:00 at the Unitarian Universalist Church.

4. Dr. Matthew Fleischman presented the program, introduction and update regarding neurofeedback.

He described the discovery and history of neurofeedback. He explained how neurofeedback provides the means to map how the brain communicates with itself through neural network, discover the areas of the brain that are relevant to the clients problems, and retrain the brain networks. He provided a variety of case examples including an elderly woman with a long history of migraines; a child with ADHD, OCD, and anger problem;s and a disabled man dependent on pain medication. During the presentation, he demonstrated the process of neurofeedback using the equipment.

Dr. Fleischman believes that recent research on neural networks in the brain and their sensitivity to feedback could point to an entirely new direction for behavioral health providers that would allow us to treat conditions that we can’t currently treat and reach populations that we can’t currently reach. Dr. Fleischman believes that the disease models is not working well for psychologists, that we tend treat primarily the “worried well” and do not do as well at reaching populations that are poor, highly disturbed, or minorities. He believes that there are advantages to therapy that is not as heavily reliant on talk therapy. Dr. Fleischman also believes that psychopharmacology is not evolving and that neurofeedback is more empowering for clients than medication. He values it as a clinician because it can be scaled to the individual, is easily taught, is dynamic, and is clinically rewarding.

Respectfully submitted, Bill McConochie, Secretary.
