Public Outreach Highlights.

GRASSHOPR Coordinator. 2009-2011.

  • Coordinator of the Graduate Student School Outreach Project, operated through Cornell’s Public Service Center, over two academic years.
  • Responsible for recruiting and managing a group of graduate and professional students and matching them to local classrooms, where they teach a spring semester mini-course on a topic related to their research.
  • Roleincluded production of recruitment and application materials for both graduate students and teachers, interviewing 27 teams of graduate student applicants, reaching out to K-12 teachers in the community, matching graduate student course descriptions to needs of teachers, developing training materials for graduate student instructors, and maintaining contact with volunteers and teachers throughout 15 mini-courses.
  • Designed and implemented program evaluation.
  • GRASSHOPR instructor in Spring 2008 for 8 mini-course sessions.

NASA Space Grant International Year of Astronomy Student Ambassador. 2009.

  • Member of the planning committee for Apollo 11 40th Anniversary Celebration at Cornell. Responsible for event setup and AV for panel discussion; led family activities for over 150 participants. July 18, 2009.
  • Collaborated with the staff of the Museum of the Earth at the Paleontological Research Institute to hold an astronomy-themed family event, “Museum in the Dark.” Organized a set of 3 activities and 11 interactive stations, and recruited a group of 15 volunteers. October 29, 2009.
  • Developed and provided training for five portableschool activity kits in collaboration with the EYES (Encourage Young Engineers and Scientists) program at Cornell’s Public Service Center.
  • Sponsor and co-organizer for New York K-6 International Year of Astronomy art contest.

Curious About Astronomy? Ask an Astronomer! 2005 – present.

  • Webmaster and moderator for a popular service that answers questions submitted by the general public to a group of volunteers in Cornell’s Astronomy Department.
  • Completed website updates and administrative duties.
  • Personally answered more than1,100 questions over five years.
  • Founding member, producer, and writer for Ask an Astronomer podcast team.

Focus for Teens. 4-H Career Explorations Program. Activity leader, 2006; coordinator of Astronomy workshop, 2007, 2008 & 2009; co-coordinator, 2010.

  • 3-day workshop (14 contact hours each year) offered to 20 high school students from New York State each summer.
  • Acted as the primary liaison between the astronomy department workshop and the Cornell 4-H office.
  • Developed schedule andcurriculum, obtained materials, recruited volunteers, and oversaw operations and logistics during the workshop, in addition to teaching workshop sessions.

ALFALFA Undergraduate Team Outreach

  • Volunteer for conferences held at the Arecibo Observatory (January 9-15, 2009; January 10-14, 2010; January 17-19, 2011); the ALFALFA Undergraduate Team (UAT) gives faculty and students at undergraduate-focused institutions the opportunity to participate in a large research collaboration.
  • Provide on-site and remote observing training and 24-hour telephone support for UAT participants at 18 institutions.
  • Facilitate undergraduate participation through social media.
  • Developing ALFALFA lesson plans with two of the UAT leads, S. Higdon and B. Koopmann.
