Environmental Health & Safety Consultant

Reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety, the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Consultant is a subject matter expert providing support, advice and guidance to the business unit with respect to all Environmental Health & Safety activities and programs from a health & safety perspective. .

The incumbent will provide proactive and reactive EHS client support to internal business units to address EHS hazards, risks and incidents, and improve EHS performance across the organization. They will also support the implementation and execution of planned Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) programs and systems to maintain legislative compliance, and conformance with established environmental, health and safety management systems.

The Incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct, policies and internal control procedures, laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.

KEY RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • The development, implementation and monitoring of effective Environment Health & Safety systems
  • Application of a risk based approach to managing EHS activities
  • Provide strong leadership to assigned client base towards achieving an injury-free workplace
  • Contribute towards maintaining ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 registration
  • On-going improvements in systems, processes, technological changes and methodology
  • Conduct EHS audits and provide concise reports with sound recommendations
  • Preparation of various reports & proposals
  • Management of EHS project workflow
  • Manages multiple client assignments and projects
  • Keeps current with EHS best practices, new developments & trends
  • Participates in incident investigations
  • Provides subject matter expertise in defined areas
  • Develop and deliver EHS training
  • On call requirements via a rotation and requirement to carry a pager
  • Travel throughout the City of Toronto

REQUIREMENTS:

University degree (Major in Health & Safety, Sciences or Engineering is preferred)

Three to five (3-5) years of progressive experience in Environmental Health & Safety.

  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or working towards CRSP designation
  • Masters Degree in Health Science is considered an asset
  • Experience in the development and implementation of EHS programs, policies and procedures
  • Experience in maintenance of ISO 14001 and/or OHSAS 18001
  • Experience with developing, implementing and monitoring environmental programs
  • Experience managing contractor safety programs
  • Knowledge and experience with the implementation of an integrated environment, health and safety management system
  • Comprehensive knowledge of OFC,WSIA, EPA, OHSA and regulations
  • Knowledge of return to work principles and practices
  • Knowledge of developing, implementing and monitoring environmental programs
  • Knowledge of environmental compliance monitoring and contaminated site remediation requirements
