CVS NEWS [BACK TO TOP]

There is still a lot of exciting work happening behind the scenes at CVS; networking with the wider sector has been instrumental to our work and understanding the needs of partner organisations, members and service users, as we work towards developing our new three year business plan. Meetings with key funders and commissioners in the District and making renewed links with the Scouts Association and social enterprise sector have been recent key developments in our work, along with ensuring that our funders understand the varied work that happens across Lancaster District. It is always great to see old friends and we always welcome new ones to the fold.

The need to promote, invest in, and protect the work that happens locally amidst the cuts is vital and is an area that we will continue to pursue in the coming months, both locally and across Lancashire.

We will continue to meet with and listen to our members and represent the views of the sector. As always, please do get in touch with your stories and concerns and we will endeavour to support you.

Watch this space for our new website, developing Facebook page and social media presence!

VOLUNTEER CENTRE NEWS [BACK TO TOP]

A THANK YOU

Mark, Yak and the rest of the team at CVS would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who came together at our recent Volunteer Achievement Awards. It is fair to say that we divided opinion on the night with plenty of positive feedback but also a lot of constructive criticism to ponder for next year’s event. Thank you to everyone who contributed, to everyone who attended, to everyone who provided us with feedback and most of all to all the volunteers across Lancaster District, without whom we would not be able to deliver services.

A REMINDER

The Volunteer Centre is here to help you source and recruit volunteers, as well as help with such things as volunteer policies, development of role descriptions, training – in fact anything that relates to volunteering. So if you feel that your organisation could make use of these services, please contact Mark Waddington on 01524 555900 or email .

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S NETWORK MEETING

The next meeting will be at 10am on Monday 27th July at The Cornerstone, Sulyard Street. Please let Mark Waddington know if you would like to attend and if you would like to be added to the circulation list for future emails, if you are a volunteer coordinator and are not currently part of this network.

WALNEY EXTENSION COMMUNITY FUND – HAVE YOUR SAY

In November 2014, DONG Energy was granted planning permission for an extension to the operational Walney offshore wind farm. The extension will be located in the Irish Sea, around 19km WSW off the Walney Island coast in Cumbria.

DONG Energy has committed to a Community Benefit Fund ("the Fund") worth up to £660,000 each year. GrantScape has been appointed by DONG Energy to undertake a consultation exercise to get views from local people on how this money for the community should be allocated.

The process starts with a simple online survey. Anyone can complete it as long as you are over 18. We are particularly interested in the views and opinions of people in coastal locations in Cumbria and Lancashire.

The survey will be open until the end of July 2015. There are only 11 questions, and it should take you no more than 10 minutes to complete.

Take the survey at www.grantscape.org.uk/fund/wecf

For further information about the Fund please view the website. If you would like to complete the survey over the phone then please call Matt, Tina or Andrew at

GrantScape on 01908 247634. You can also register your interest for further Fund updates by sending an email to HERE

SURVEY ON THE STATE OF THE VOLUNTARY AND COMMUNITY YOUTH SECTOR

In a few weeks’ time, The National Council for Voluntary Youth Services will be hosting an event in Westminsterbringing together the youth sector and thenew parliament, enabling our member organisationsto showcase their work to key decision makers. We want to use this opportunity to tell MPs and Lords about the current state of the voluntary and community youth sector, so we've set up a survey so you can tell us about your current experiences with funding and delivering your work.

The Minister for Civil Society and Youth Policy, Rob Wilson MP, has already heard our assessmentof youth sector finances and wants to know more, so he and his teamwill be looking forward to seeing our analysis of the surveyresults. The more we all know about the story of the sector, the morewe can do toinfluence decision makers to invest in young people.

It's been a couple of years since we'vesurveyed the sector in such depthand the start of a new government is animportant timeto develop the sector's evidence base. We intend to repeat the survey more oftenin the future, so we can get a clearer picture of the trends youth organisations are going through.

You will need some understanding of your organisation's finances andstaffing information to fill outthe survey (e.g. from the annual report you submit to the Charity Commission), but it should only takea maximum of 15-20 minutes to complete. If you can complete it by Monday July 6, then your (anonymised) responses will contribute to our next report and the forthcoming parliamentary event.

THE LAUNCH OF “A LIFE MORE ORDINARY”

The Dukes 10am – 12pm (10.30am start)

A Life More Ordinary is a pioneering three year programme, created, delivered and managed by The Dukes, Age UK Lancashire & Lancaster University’s Centre for Ageing Research, of film and arts activity for older people living with dementia being. It builds on the work delivered by the three partners to date in Lancaster but now seeks to extend the scope and geography of this work.

The launch will be an opportunity to hear more about the achievements of the programme to date, the future range of activity and the opportunity for cultural venues and health care commissioners to become partners in the next phase of work.

Lancashire has around 17,600 people with dementia aged 65 and over. These numbers are expected to rise to more than 25,600 by 2025. In Lancaster alone, there were 1,823 people with dementia in 2010, predicted to rise by 42% by 2025.

A Life More Ordinary is generously supported by Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, the BFI through Film Hub NWC, The Rayne Foundation, Dowager Countess Eleanor Peel Trust and The Elspeth J Thompson Charitable Trust.

Members of the three partners will be available to answer your questions about the programme. The event will finish at midday. A limited number of tickets are available for that afternoon's dementia-friendly screening of 'Funny Face'.

To book your place for the launch visit HERE. You can also reserve complimentary tickets for the 2pm dementia friendly film screening via the same link.

CROSS COMMUNITY 7-A-SIDE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT – YEARS 7 – 11 (ages 11 – 16)

Date of tournaments: 4 in total. Thursday 30th July, Thursday 6th, 13th, 20th August

Times: 12pm-5pm

Cost: Free to young people and their clubs.

Transport: Provided by each club, funding available to help pay for travel. Games take place at Salt Ayre Sports Centre

Food & drinks: Free food and drinks will be provided at the end of each tournament day. Please let me know your dietary requirements on the form provided.

Trophies: Trophies will be provided for certain criteria’s at the end of each event. Traditionally we have awarded best team, best player, fair player, best goal, best keeper and a trophy for the overall winner (the team that wins most tournaments)

In regards to ages, these events are for year 7 to year 11. If they are leaving school this time around, they are fine to play. Ages do cause a number issues because ‘older’ young people want to play. We are making plans to accommodate players outside of this age range. Please let me know if wish to submit a team of older players so that this can be factored into each event. Please note, all 7 players must be over year 12.

Copies of our risk assessment and code of conduct forms will be distributed to interested teams. Standard procedure but given the level of young people that attend, the nature of the activity, there are some considerations that need to be taken into account for health and safety and to ensure good sportsmanship. Please take the time to read these.

Finally, all balls and bibs will be provided but games only. WE are looking for Referees and I would be grateful if you could supply any volunteers to ref!

For further information please contact Yak Patel on 01524 555900 or email . Deadline for team entries: Wednesday 29th July 2pm please.
