K-5 Elementary Summer Learning Opportunity Program Information

Description

The Elementary Summer Learning Opportunity program will provide extra support for learners in grades K-5 in the core academic areas of reading, writing and math. Families will have their choice of a traditional, 5 hour per day program, or a Specialty site option, for 7 hours per day of targeted instruction.

Emphasis

The goal of this program is to improve reading, writing and math skills of students who are performing below grade level

Eligibility

K-5 Summer Learning Opportunityprogram is open to students who are currently enrolled in Columbus City Schools and have completed grades K, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 during the 2016-2017 school year. Students who live outside of the district are not eligible to enroll in the elementary K-5 Summer Learning Opportunity program.

Programs

Students who register for one of the elementary K-5 Summer Learning Opportunityprograms will be placed in the program of the grade level they completed for the 2016-17 school year. For example, if your child just completed kindergarten, then he/she will be placed in the kindergarten summer program.

Dates

Monday, June 19 through Thursday, July 20, 2017. K-5 will attend Monday through Thursday only.

All Summer School sites will be closed on Tuesday July 4, 2017. On Tuesday July 11, 2017, only grade 3 students taking the AIR assessment will attend.

Class Time

Half Day K-5 summer school begins promptly at 8:00 A.M. and ends 1:00 P.M. (No school on Fridays) for the half day program. K-5 Full Day Specialty programs begin promptly at 8:00 A.M. and ends at 3:00 P.M.

Breakfast and Lunch

All meals must be consumed on site. Food is not allowed to leave the summer school site.

K-5 Program: Breakfast is served at 8:00 a.m. Lunch is served 12:30-1:00 p.m.

Attendance

Daily attendance is required in order for your child to benefit from the summer learning opportunity programs. Every effort should be made to get your child to school on time and ready for instruction. Please call the summer school site before 8:15 a.m. if your child is going to be absent.

Vacations/Camps

Students with vacation or camp plans conflicting with the summerprogram dates are advised not to enroll in the Summer Learning Opportunities program. Vacations and camp are not excused absences.

Discipline

Students are expected to follow all rules and regulations of Columbus City Schools. Discipline issues will be handled as specified in the Columbus City Schools’ Guide to Positive Student Behavior.

Dismissal

K-5 Program: All children who are not taking the bus must be picked up by 1:10 p.m. unless they are participating in the Boys and Girls Club Program. (3:10 p.m. for the full day program) If a student is not picked up on time, it is CCS policy to contact Franklin County Children Services.

Transportation

Students may attend the Summer Learning Opportunityprogram site of their choice. Transportation will be provided by the Columbus City Schools bus transportation department at designated locations for each summer school site. The chart included in this packet shows the bus stops for the selected summer school location.

Materials

All books and materials loaned to students must be returned in satisfactory condition by the last day of class.

Fee

There is no charge for the K-5 Summer Learning Opportunities program for students currently enrolled in Columbus City Schools.

Registrations Forms

Title I Parent Meetings 8:30a.m.-10:30a.m.

Parents who have children that completed grades K, 1, and 2 and are enrolled in the Summer Learning Opportunities program are required to attend three parent meetings. Each meeting will focus on how parents can help their child at home with reading, writing and math. If you cannot attend, parents are encouraged to send another adult to represent their child. Parents may also attend a parent meeting at another site if it is more convenient. The schedule of parent meetings is included in this booklet.

3rd Grade Specialty Site (Weinland Park)

The goal of this program is to serve 3rd grade students who have not met the requirements of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee (3GRG) and thereby are not eligible to be promoted to the fourth grade.This specialty program will be held at Weinland Park Elementary School from 8:00a.m.-3:00p.m. Monday through Thursday. Students who enroll in this program will participate in morning reading instruction and afternoon extracurricular activities with a focus on improving their reading skill.

2nd and 3rd Grade Specialty Site(Clinton)

Second and Third grade students who enroll in this program will participate in morning reading and math instruction, and afternoon extracurricular activities that include: Lego Robotics, Computers, Multimedia, and History of Sports, Art from Around the World, Drama and Dance.

ELEMENTARY SUMMER LEARNING OPPORTUNITY PROGRAMS

  1. Can anyone attend the elementary Summer Learning Opportunitiesprogram?

Priority is given to currently enrolled Columbus City Schools' students, with a preference to students performing below grade level in reading. Students who live in the Columbus City School District attendance area, but attend a parochial or charter school can attend if space is available. Students who live outside of the district are not eligible to enroll in the elementary summer learning opportunity program.

  1. Is there a charge to attend the elementary summer learning opportunity program?

There is no charge for currently enrolled CCS students.

  1. Will transportation be provided for elementary summer school?

Transportation is provided for our elementary summer learning opportunity program.

  1. Where do I turn in my registration form for the elementary summer program?

Registration should be completed online at website. The deadline to complete registration is Friday, June 9, 2017.

  1. My child attends a parochial and/or charter school. Can my child attend the elementary summer school learning opportunity program?

Non-CCS students who live in the district may be accepted if space is available after all interested CCS students have registered. Students who live outside of the district are not eligible to enroll in the elementary summer learning opportunity program.

  1. Who should I call if I have questions about the elementary summer learning opportunity programs or transportation?

You may call the summer school office at 365-5010.

  1. Does my child have to stay for the lunch program?

No. If your child is in the K-5 program and does not stay for lunch, he/she should be picked up by 12:30 p.m.

  1. How will I know which summer school location my child will attend?

After completing the online registration, your receipt will indicate your location. Registration does not guarantee acceptance since space is limited.

  1. If my child doesn’t stay to eat lunch, can he/she take the lunch home?

No. Federal guidelines prohibit food from leaving the building.

  1. If students are enrolled in the summer learning opportunity programs, can they participate in the Columbus Metropolitan Library Summer Reading Program?

Yes! Students enrolled in summer school will be signed up for the Columbus Library Summer Reading Program. Representatives from the Columbus Library will visit each summer school site to sign up students and then visit weekly to log in their reading minutes. Students will be eligible for the library prizes as they accumulate reading minutes.

  1. I don’t want my child to say for the Boys and Girls Club program in the afternoon, will bus transportation be provided for them after lunch?

No. You must make arrangements to have your child picked up by 1:10. If a student is not picked up on time, it is CCS policy to contact Franklin County Children Services.
