Applications are invited for a LA/Clinical Fellow post in Clinical Genetics commencing 01/12/2016 for 8 monthsin the West of Scotland Clinical Genetics Service. The appointee will join the clinical team of 9 Consultants, 2 Clinical Genetics trainees and 11 Genetic Counsellors providing Regional Genetics Services to the five Health Boards of the West of Scotland, serving a population of 2.6 million. The department is based in the Clinical Genetics Department, in the new Laboratories Medicine Building at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, which houses the regional cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, molecular genetics and molecular pathology services. This is a full time post, but part-time working will also be considered.

All applicants must possess full GMC Registration, a licence to practise and fulfil the person specifications for ST3 entry into a Clinical Genetics training programme.

This post holds educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean. If appointed as a Clinical Fellow the post will not be recognised for training.

1. BACKGROUND

This is a fixed term full time training post, but part time working will be considered, commencing on the 01/12/2016 for 8 months. The post is based within the West of Scotland Department of Clinical Genetics, in the Laboratories Directorate. The Department is based within the NewLaboratoriesBuilding at the QueenElizabethUniversityHospital (previously known as the Southern General Hospital). Dr Gordon Lowther is currently the Head of Service. The Department provides Regional Genetics Services to the five Health Boards of the West of Scotland, serving a population of 2.6 million.

2.WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT

The main work of the Clinical Genetic Department is in providing clinical genetic diagnosis and advice to the 6000+ families referred every year.

There are currently 9 NHS consultants in addition to 1 honorary consultant, and 2 specialist registrars. There are 11 genetic counsellors, 1 single gene complex needs nurse, 1 clinic nurse, 1 research nurse and 1 Neuromuscular Care Advisor.

Clinics are held within the Clinical Genetics department, and at a number of other sites including CrosshouseHospital in Kilmarnock; InverclydeRoyalHospital in Greenock; ForthValleyRoyalHospital, Larbert; Wishaw Health Centre; Cumbernauld; Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary; MonklandsHospital, Airdrie. A number of specialist joint clinics are also held at RoyalHospital for Children and other sites within Glasgow.

(c)Duties of the Post:

(i)Clinical- details of all clinical commitments

The post will be based in the West of Scotland Department of Genetics (Clinical), NewLaboratoriesBuilding, QueenElizabethUniversity hospital, Glasgow (formerly Southern General Hospital).

The post holder will enter a training post in clinical genetics. The post holder will be assigned an Educational Supervisor and clinical commitments will depend on previous experience. There will be at least 1-2 out-patient sessions a week and the trainee will be involved, with Consultant support, in ward visits to hospitals within the region for patient assessment and counselling, communication (and interpretation) of prenatal diagnostic and laboratory test results to clinical colleagues and patients, audit of the clinical service, and administrative duties associated with the running of the clinical service including pre-clinic workup, and maintenance of clinical databases.

(ii)Other duties: Audit, Teaching & CPD

The appointee will be expected to be involved in theDepartmental Meetings, CPD, and audit. Depending on the appointee’s previous experience, they may be involved in teaching duties which may include assistance with the teaching of medical genetics to postgraduates and to members of the nursing and paramedical professions.

(e)In addition to the duties mentioned above, duties at other hospitals administered by the Health Board may be necessary.

(v)For all new entrants to the Health Service a medical examination will be required prior to confirmation of the appointment. You will also be required to provide evidence of your immune response to Hepatitis B.

SUPERANNUATION / New entrants to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who are aged sixteen but under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership of the NHS Pension Scheme. Should you choose to "opt out" arrangements can be made to do this via:
