Course Outline
Welcome to the Carlton Physical Education Department. We offer a variety of activities through our Grade 9, Wellness 10, PE 20 & PE 30 programs. I look forward to having an enjoyable and active year with you.
Activities:
The activities you will be participation in this year are as follows:

Attendance Policy
Our attendance policy reflects that of the school; parents must call in to explain any absence whether prior to or after an absence.
Evaluation
Grade 9 Physical Education consists of 13 different outcomes. These outcomes are divided into three different categories or focuses: Skill Based Outcomes, Fitness Related Outcomes, and
Theory Based Outcomes. Each student must successfully complete each outcome to receive a positive standing in the class. Evaluation for each outcome will be done using a four point scale or rubric. You must have a minimum of a two in each outcome to be considered in positive standing. Each student will have the opportunity to reassess outcomes at designated times to improve their standing in each outcome.
Skill Based Outcomes
9.4 – Implement personal plans for improvement of a self-selected skill-related component of fitness
9.5 – Build skills towards proficiency in 4 self-selected movement skills.
9.6 – Design and implement plans to use effective tactics and strategies in games.
9.7 – Design and implement plans to use effective tactics and strategies in alternative environment activities.
Fitness Based Outcomes
9.1 – Examine and apply principals of training. Incorporate daily moderate to vigorous movement activity. Develop a personal action plan. Focus on improvement.
9.3 – Investigate and apply strategies for developing core strength.
9.11 – Apply understanding of how to prevent and care for activity related injuries.
Theory Based Outcomes
9.2 – Determine options for managing body composition and weight. Analyze influence of mass media on body image.
9.8 – Express insights on experience in body management activities (dance, aquatics, gymnastics, weight training, yoga).
9.9 – Plan, participate, and lead a movement activity.
9.10 – Analyze influence of mass media and determine impact on active living.
9.12 – Demonstrate and incorporate and understanding of respectful behavior.
9.13 – Identify and analyze personal perspectives on how to manage opportunities and challenges.
Required Materials
· Appropriate gym T-shirt
· Shorts or sweats
· Non-Marking running shoes
· Swim suit
· Goggles (available in office)
· Mouth Guards (available in office)
Dress Code
Students are to maintain an acceptable standard of dress in the physical education setting. PE staff reserve the right to have students change clothing which they deem inappropriate for the learning environment.
The following are protocols for student dress:
· Clothing that reveals a person’s midriff, cleavage, underwear or buttocks are unacceptable.
· Strapless garments and plunging necklines are not to be worn.
· Clothing with offensive language, pictures, designs or slogans including alcohol or drug symbols, or racist related wording are not acceptable.
· Students are not to wear headgear (e.g. hats, bandanas, toques).
· Proper footwear is to be worn in at all times. (no boots, flip flops, heels, bare/sock feet, outdoor shoes, etc.)
Language & Behavior
The Carlton physical education department relies on inclusive and respectful language and behavior to provide an appropriate learning environment for all who take part. As such, foul language, displays of poor sportsmanship, bullying, disrespectful interactions with staff or peers, will not be tolerated. This code of conduct applies to all phys. Ed facilities and areas, in and out of class time.
Medical Exemption:
If a student is unable to participate due to a medical reason, a note from a medical professional, or parent/guardian, must be given to your teacher at the beginning of class. If the student is not able to participate for an extended period, please send documentation of that time period.
New Procedures
1. There will be no lockers or showers available for student use in the Physical Education area until the end of the first semester.
2. A changing area with benches will be provided during PE classes and for sports teams in B107/B107A.
3. You will need to bring a gym bag that you will carry with you to the location of your class or practice. Nothing will be left in the change rooms.
4. The change rooms will have a 5 minute time limit for use as directed by your teacher. They will not be open between classes.
5. Valuables such as money, jewelry, and cell phones should be left in your school locker. Take only your gym bag with you.
6. There is also no water fountain available in the immediate PE area due to demolition. Therefore, students are encouraged to bring their own water containers to class. Only containers that have a screw top lid will be accepted in PE facilities.
Facilities:
We are proud to have one of the finest Physical Education facilities in the province. We have the following facilities available to you:
· Red Gym – Open at lunch
· Gold Gym – Open at lunch (floor hockey)
· White MPR – wrestling/gymnastics
· Weight Room – Open at lunch and after school until 5:00pm
· Swimming Pool – free at lunch and after school until 5:00 PM
· All Weather Track
· Ball Diamonds
· Soccer/Football Fields
· Art Hauser Center
Note: Students must be changed into physical education attire in order to use the red gym and weight room at lunch. You do not have to change to play floor hockey in the gold gym, but need a mouth guard and goggles.
