Self- Perceived Communication Competence Analysis
Describe yourself as a communicator
Due to the fact that I am social and talkative, I find it easy for me to have a conversation with almost anybody. I am friendly, outgoing and not afraid to start a conversation. Although I can be shy at times, I am comfortable speaking in front of friends, family, and certain strangers. (53 words)
Analysis of data
My total SPCC score was 93.3 percent. I scored 100 percent in group, above 90 percent in meeting, Dyad, acquaintance, and friend. I scored the lowest in stranger with an 85 percent, which in my case is still a descent score. The area I need to improve the most would be communicating with strangers. I feel I scored the lowest in this category because like I mentioned earlier, I have shy moments sometimes so I need to learn to not be so timid. I need to practice my public speaking skills and learn to not be so nervous when being in front of a large group of people. I realized that the most difficult part for me is gaining that courage to speak in front of strangers. I feel sometimes as if my mind is there but not my body. I sometimes even tempt to panic before even being in front of strangers but once I am up there and present, my confidence level goes up. (166 words)
Plan for improvement
“Even though many people will not pursue a career that call for extensive formal speaking, many of us will be in situations where speaking up is a responsibility. “ (Julia T. Wood) Growing up I never found the true meaning of communication. I never put in the effort to perfect my communication skills. Now, I find public speaking very important to me. We use it on the daily basis from correcting someone when they mess up your order at a Starbucks to presenting in front of a small group of people in a classroom. Being able to project your voice and speak your mind is something every person should perfect due to the fact that it will help later in the work field. Being able to communicate with others can help open so many doors and help you succeed in life.
I have learned that when you communicate with someone everything if much more clear and understandable. If you do not communicate you will have a hard time getting to where you want to get. When in the work field you need to be able to have a strong voice and speak loudly in order for your co-workers to respect you. Having communication skills show that you can be a great leader, which can help you gain a promotion.
In this class I will practice my public speaking when asked. I will prepare my self well enough to present the class with good information. I will try to be very precise and not repeat myself. I will focus on discussing the main points and making sure I have the audiences attention. Although I will still have that nervous feeling inside I will try to control it better in order to perfect my public speaking skills. I want to be able to present in front of people without stuttering and rushing through a presentation. Due to the fact that I want to become a Probation Officer I need to be able to have great communication skills in order to help the people. I want them to take me serious and not think I do not know what I am talking about. In order to succeed with this I will also be practicing my public speaking in small groups. I want to make sure I am able to keep my classmates interested in what I am saying. I would also love to get some constructive feed back so I know what I need to work on to better my communication skills. (419 words)
