ROLLERS VS. JIKERS – WHO IS FASTER??

PURPOSE: ______

BACKGROUND: (include at least THREE facts about pill bugs that will be helpful to this discovery ______

HYPOTHESIS: Justify why you have chosen this hypothesis:

MATERIALS:

Lots of Pill Bugs!!!

Rulers (with centimeters/millimeters)

Box or other “wall”

Tape??

Paint Brushes

PROCEDURE:

1.  Design a NARROW race track on your desk so that the rolly polly will stay on the track. You must be able to place a ruler along one wall.

2.  Place a Roller in the track.

3.  Time his forward movement until he stops (this may be tricky – he will have to be comfortable that he is safe – or what will happen??)

4.  Record the distance and time in the chart below

5.  Repeat this 5 times, recording your cm and seconds on the data sheet below

6.  Repeat this process with a Hiker

RESULTS AND DATA:

YOUR group data:

TRIALS / ROLLERS / HIKERS
Trial one / __cm/___sec / __cm/___sec
Trial two / __cm/___sec / __cm/___sec
Trial three / __cm/___sec / __cm/___sec
Trial four / __cm/___sec / __cm/___sec
Trial Five / __cm/___sec / __cm/___sec
TOTALS – Total centimeters AND total seconds separately / __cm/___sec / __cm/___sec
Average centimeters AND average seconds / __cm/___sec / __cm/___sec

Collect Data from other Groups

Group Names / Average: ROLLERS / Average: HIKERS
Group: / __cm/___sec / __cm/___sec
Group: / __cm/___sec / __cm/___sec
Group: / __cm/___sec / __cm/___sec
Group: / __cm/___sec / __cm/___sec
YOUR AVERAGES / __cm/___sec / __cm/___sec
TOTALS – Total centimeters AND total seconds separately / __cm/___sec / __cm/___sec
NEW GROUP Average centimeters AND average seconds / __cm/___sec / __cm/___sec

CONCLUSIONS:

1.  What is the average speed of each species in centimeters per ONE second?

  1. Rollers: ______Hikers: ______

2.  Who is faster? Rollers or Hikers? ______

3.  By how much?______

4.  Why did we collect data from other groups? ______

5.  Might our data come out differently if we had collected data from the entire class? Would we get more reliable results? Why or why not? ______

6.  What problems did you discover about your experimental design?? ( the design of your track?) ______

7.  What other tests would you like to explore in order to learn more about Pill bugs? Describe it in detail! ______
