Dear Beech Parents,

“Olivia” musical production – Costumes, tickets and learning lines

After ½ term Oak and Beech start working in earnest on our KS2 musical – Olivia! The musical is set in Victorian times and has many of the characters from “Oliver!”

Everyone in Beech will be involved in learning songs and some children will have a minor speaking part: major parts always go to Oak. We need to be sure that before we assign any speaking parts to Beech we are definite that children will be present not just at the afternoon performances, but at the evening one as well. Please complete the slip overleaf and return to the school office by Tuesday 7th June.

We are hoping that it would be relatively easy for all children in Beech to be dressed as an orphan. The following pictures give an idea of the costumes we would like ‘orphans’ to be wearing.

Orphan Girls

·  Long skirt with plain top OR long dress

·  OPTIONAL – Pinafore/Mop cap

Orphan Boys or Girls

·  Dull coloured shirt and/or waistcoat

·  Dull coloured shorts/trousers

·  OPTIONAL – Flat cap

All of the above may look more effective if edges of fabric are frayed/ripped.

In order to reduce noise, all characters will be barefoot.

PLEASE DO NOT FEEL PRESSURED INTO BUYING COSTUMES.

The above is a guide; you do not have to have everything in the bullet points. In fact, we already have quite a few spare ‘orphan’ style sets of clothes in school. Do pop in to school and ask if you would prefer to use school costumes or are unsure about any of this.

We would like the children to bring in their intended costume on a named hanger by Friday 1st July and then keep it in school, ready for the performances.

·  Tuesday 12th July at 1:45pm - dress rehearsal for the rest of the school. (Parents are welcome to join us then if neither of the other times is convenient.)

·  Wednesday 13th July at 1:45pm and Thursday 14th July at 7pm - “polished” performances.

Tickets

Details about tickets to follow, but assume that each Oak/Beech family will have at least 3 tickets for the afternoon performance and at least 3 tickets for the evening performance.

Homework – learning lines

We have been singing the songs in school and Beech’s homework for ½ term will be to continue learning lyrics and singing the songs. The songs and whole script is already on the school website, in ‘Oak’s homework’.

Do pop in to school and ask if you would prefer to use school costumes or are unsure about any of this.

Many thanks for your support

Best wishes

Jo Smith

If you happen to have any Victorian style costumes/props at home, it would be great if we could borrow a…

·  Judge’s style gown, wig and gavel (Judge’s hammer)

·  Top hat (we could do with one for Fagin and another for Dodger)

·  Bridesmaid/wedding dress ‘the frillier the better!’ that could be cut up/adapted (any colour).

·  Feather boa

·  Deer stalker hat and/or pipe (for Sherlock Holmes)

·  Police officer’s hat/truncheon

·  Plastic flowers/flower baskets for flower sellers

.

PLEASE RETURN TO SCHOOL OFFICE BY TUES 7TH JUNE
