Hungarian History and Culture in the 19th–20th Centuries

Course Description:

Debrecen Summer School offers an academic course for foreigners who are interested in the history and culture, the past and the present of Hungary but whose level of Hungarian is not yet enough to immerse in the topic. The course has been designed with special regard to those who (might) get into contact with Hungary or Central Europe. Based on the major turning points of the history of our country in the 19th-20th centuries, Modern Hungary provides a comprehensive portrait of the political and cultural events as well as persons and institutions of nearly two centuries.

The additional cultural activities will provide an opportunity for the participants to visit places which are closely connected to the events and personalities discussed in the lectures and seminars.

Hungary during the Napoleonic Wars; The Reform Age in Hungary; Calvinism and Enlightenment; Revolution, Oppression and Compromise; The Dual Monarchy; Hungarian Romantic Art and Literature; Hungary in the Great War; The First Generation of Nyugat; Hungarian Painting in the First Half of the 20th Century; Hungary in World War II; The Hungarian Jewry in the 19th and 20th Centuries; Hungary after 1945; Literature under Communism; Hungarian Literature and Film in the 20th Century

Structure of the Course:

– 3 blocks of classes (3 × 90 min) a day

– examination offered at the end of the course (ECTS credits)

– registration: 15 July (Sunday), 14:00–18:00

– course starts: 16 July (Monday)

– daily schedule: 9:00–10:30; 11:00–12:30; 14:00–15:30

– tuition ends: 27 July (Friday)

– check-out time: 28 August (Saturday), before 10:00

Accommodation and Meals:

– on-campus accommodation: Kossuth Lajos Dormitories (single, double or 3-bedded rooms)

– upon request, we can book a room in a hotel (please contact the Summer School staff)

– full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner)
