GENERAL INFORMATION

This is a 1-Semester course worth 1/2 credits that is intended for students in grade 8. Marketing is a series of dynamic activities that focus on the process required to generate a profitable exchange between buyers and seller. Areas of interest that will be addressed in this course include product distribution, financing, marketing, information management, product pricing, planning, placement and distribution of consumer goods. Students will be able to integrate skills from academic subjects including information technology, English language arts, communications application, science and mathematics in order to better understand the various concepts of the free enterprise system. These concepts will help foster equitable buying decisions and ways to find solutions to marketing problems that will enhance student awareness of supply and demand, product knowledge, and encourage entrepreneurship. They will gain knowledge of human resource skills, which include resume, cover letter writing, and interviewing skills. Students will also engage in intensive college admittance and research activities including the SAT, ACT, and College Application process. They will also gain valuable information concerning career research, investigation.

INTRODUCTION

In this course the student will:

Obtain the knowledge and skill to verbally discuss and orally present the process and strategies of marketing activities established by the four P’s product, price, place, and promotion. (I.e. production, marketing, management, and finance.)

Understand proper business conduct as it relates to customer service and building relationships with retail management and businesses within the community. They will also participate in leadership and career activities.

Describe the standard marketing functions from product inception to point of sale, and how this process can relate to a small business vs. a corporate structure.

Develop a foundation in the economical, financial, technological, international, social, and ethical aspects of business to become competent consumers, employees, and entrepreneurs.

Enhance reading, writing, computing, communications, and reasoning skills and apply them to the business environment. Students will prepare a written composition to be graded on sentence structure and proper use of grammar according to established English language arts standards. They will also identify the effects of other languages other than English in the market place.

Students will have a clear understanding of the financial aspect of marketing ones self; which includes acquiring financial support, business plan development,and budget analysis. They will also discover the effects that these marketing tools have on the market place and how they can position themselves to be globally prepared for the market place.

They will appraise and critique real-life problems thatthey might encounter case studies and establish conclusions and solutions that could have been utilized. They will also use simulation software to justify and support their personal decisions based on a role-play situation where each student is a business owner.

Students will keep a journal that will contain analysis of current world events and their effects on the marketplace. They will also contain Essay critiques of guest speakers and various exploration outings that we will take.

Keep and maintain a portfolio that exhibits projects created in class and sample work of major projects completed.

Students will explore all aspects of being globally prepared for the market place.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

Develop a product and marketing strategy to generate brand awareness.

Research education, experience, skills, and personal requirements for careers in sales andretail marketing.

Develop a business plan for ones own concept or consumer product.

Be able to demonstrate the importance of customer service and clearly understand how each role in the market place affects it.

Be aware of the diversity of cultures and how they affect supply and demand.

Analyze marketing problems and come up with equitable solutions.

Analyze a problem by formulating a structured approach.

Identify effective team building skills when incorporating the entire marketing process of a new product

Identify how your purchasing power can affect your local community and the economy.

Evaluate how companies and corporations policies and procedures must comply with government policies and the role government plays in the economic system.

Critique company decision-making strategies.

Discover the retail business through computer simulated software. Students will be able to categorize business activities as production, marketing, management, or finance.

A=90-100; B=89-80; C=79-70; F=Below 70

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

Use the restroom before class begins. No eating or drinking in the classroom. Arrive to class on time be seated and ready to begin. Treat yourself and others with respect. Discussions should be geared toward curriculum. Excessive talking is unacceptable.

Supplies Include: 1G flash drive, New 3 Ring White 1” binder for portfolio, pens, pencils, mini-pencil sharpeners, calculator, assorted color markers, glue sticks, poster boards will be used frequently student will need to keep at least 5 on hand minimum, and 1 package of computer paper, tissue, craft scissors, and construction paper.
