1.  Courses and Synopsis

1.1  Partner University Programmes

1.1.1  BSc (Hons) in Construction Management (Liverpool John Moores)

a)  Admission Criteria

Year 1 Entry:

·  ‘A’ level holders will have to complete the programme over 24 months, starting from year 1.

Year 2 Entry:

·  A relevant polytechnic Diploma (eg. Real estate, etc).

·  Professional Diploma in Construction Engineering awarded by Trent Global College.

·  Other equivalent qualifications and relevant industry experience may be considered.

b)  Course Overview

Construction management is concerned with the design and construction of buildings and has become more complex as technology and the mechanisation of the building process have developed. Construction managers need excellent interpersonal skills as well as in-depth technical knowledge of all aspects of construction process so that they can handle the responsibility of managing multimillion dollar projects.

Students will develop a good understanding of the factors affecting the design, procurement, sustainability and life-cycle of buildings focusing particular on economics, legal and managerial considerations.

A degree in Construction Management can lead to a stimulating and varied career with extensive travel. Career prospects for Construction Management Graduates are good in this region as there is a pent up demand. Most of the graduated go into construction management working for multi-national contractors and consultancies and also for organizations in the supply chain. However, the skills that are obtained within the programme albeit focused around construction can be applied into other areas such as financial control and project planning of resource, as well as the transferable skills that have acquired.

b) Course Overview

This programme focuses on the factors that affect the procurement and construction of a building or structure over its complete life cycle, with particular emphasis on the economic, legal, financial and managerial considerations of the construction process. Once you have developed the technical skills required of a quantity surveyor, you will apply them to projects that are based on ‘real’ construction scenarios. This method of working not only gives you invaluable hands-on practice, it also allows you to develop a verity of transferable skills that will give you a professional edge when you eventually start your very first quantity surveying job.

Career prospects for quantity surveying graduates are excellent with many students securing their 1st professional position working for clients, contractors or professional practices after they graduate as there is a pent up demand. b) Course Overview

Business is at the heart of every decision that is made in the property market. Recognizing the multidisciplinary nature of the property profession and its role in business, this programme seeks to develop a mix of property and business skills so that you will be well equipped to make decisions based on an in-depth understanding of the commercial property market.

The Programme will start by covering the building blocks of property such as property law, construction and valuation theory and you will then go on to develop key business and facilities management skills, opening up avenues of expertise not found on our other Real Estate management degree.

The professionally-accredited BSc (Hons) Real Estate Management and Business at Liverpool John Moores University will enable you to secure both business and real estate management skills and experience.

1.1.4  BSc in Facilities Management (Heriot Watt)

b) Course Overview

Facilities Management is responsible for co-ordinating all efforts relating to planning, designing and managing buildings and their systems, equipment and furniture to enhance an organisation’s ability to compete in a rapidly changing world. It involves the integration of multi-disciplinary activities with the built environment and the management of their impact upon the people and the workplace.

1.1.5  BSc in Construction Project Management (Heriot Watt)

This programme will enable you to manage construction projects from inception to the point at which a building is occupied, including throughout all stages of the design and construction process.

Much of the curriculum is concerned with the management and supervision of construction sites and the resource planning connected with large scale projects. There is also a strong emphasis on construction technology as well as on courses that give students a background in valuation and procurement.
