Trees for life - context

The core purpose of Trees for Life (TfL) is to restore the Caledonian Forest and all its constituent species of flora and fauna to the Scottish Highlands. By engaging volunteers to do this, TfL aims to provide a powerful and educational experience that will promote the work of restoration to wider audiences. Through providing a demonstration of the techniques of ecological restoration, TfL aims to inspire similar projects elsewhere in the UK and around the world.

Overall purpose of the job

The training coordinator role will manage TfL’s new trainee programme. It is funded via the Heritage Lottery Funds (HLF) ‘Skills for the Future’ programme.

TfL will be offering 1 year traineeships from 2018 to 2021.5 trainees will be recruited each year for 3 consecutive years. Recruitment of trainees will be targeted at groups who are currently poorly represented in the sector workforce such as young local people, women and older career changers. Trainees will learn a range of traditional rural estate management and nature conservation skills. The traineeship will also provide accredited qualifications via links with educational organisations.

Key liaisons

The key focal points for liaison are the TfL staff who will be involved in delivering the training, TfL’s partners in the project which includes the training accreditors (such as University of Highland & Islands and Scottish Countryside Rangers Association), the placement partner organisations (such as Forestry Commission, Scottish Natural Heritage, and Woodland Trust) and the recruitment partner organisations (such as local secondary schools and advertising websites).
