How to Use the Hazmat Spill Kit:

Knowing how to handle hazardous material is important to your health, that of your coworkers and the community around you. Before attempting to approach the spill, first determine that it is safe to approach the spill, follow this guide carefully:

  1. Find the Orange Emergency Response Guide.
  2. Review and follow the safety and spill or leak instructions in the guide.
  3. Put on protective gloves and mask.
  4. Use absorbent socks to contain the spill by surrounding the spill and overlapping the sock ends.
  5. Start at the farthest end of the spill to cut off possible drain contamination.
  6. If the container is still leaking:
  7. Empty the contents into the Spill Kit bucket.
  8. If the container will fit in the bucket put it inside.
  9. If the leaking container is to large use heavy duty plastic bags (Not provided).

ü  Double the bag and place the container inside the doubled bag and tie off the bag.

  1. Use the Universal Sorbent Bulk pouch to absorb the spill:
  2. Open the sorbent pouch and start at the outside part of the spill spreading the sorbent material working your way inward until the spill is covered.
  3. Let the liquid absorb into the sorbent material.
  4. Using a broom and dust pan, sweep the material into the Spill Kit bucket.
  5. Place used spill sock/s in the bucket and seal; or in heavy duty plastic bags and tie off.
  6. Clearly label the front of the bucket (and bag if used) as hazardous waste with a red permanent marker (If bagged, tape a paper label to the bag).
  7. Record the Hazmat ID number found in the ERG.
  8. Record the Hazmat chemical name of the product that was spilled (also from ERG).
  9. Clean the spill area thoroughly.
  10. Clean the broom and dust pan thoroughly.
  11. Contact your local city hall to arrange the pick-up of the Hazmat.
  12. City hall should be able to give you a source for pick up.

  3. Contact Human Resources to order new Spill Kit supplies.
