Students must be officially enrolled as a Jefferson High School student in grades 9-12.
Students must read and adhere to the MOWR policies set forth by the GADOE. Student participation in MOWR, as defined by the State Board Policy for the Move On When Ready Program, is a student choice. Because this choice exists for students, it is the responsibility of the student and the parent/guardian to be knowledgeable about the program and its potential effects upon high school graduation, grade point averages, HOPE eligibility, and class rank. Students must also complete all forms/paperwork associated with MOWR. See these links: www.gadoe.org, www.gafutures.org, www.gsfc.org.
Students interested in MOWR must schedule an appointment with the Distance Learning Coordinator (Anita Hayes) prior to March 31, 2017. This allows adequate time to process paperwork and meet GADOE MOWR guidelines. Refer to the MOWR checklist PRIOR to this appointment and bring necessary paperwork.
Students must have their own transportation to and from the college.
The Move On When Ready award, which is administered by the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC), pays for tuition, fees, and provides textbooks. Students must apply online for this award each semester; it is not automatic. Other costs of attendance such as lab fees, course related fees, meals, transportation, and personal expenses are the responsibility of the student/parent. Refer to GAfutures.org for more information about the MOWR award.
The Jefferson High School schedule takes precedence over the college course schedule. Students must be on-time for all JHS classes. The student is considered a high school student and a college student concurrently, so make sure you are prepared for this responsibility.
Breaks/holidays may differ between high school and college; however, students must adhere to both school calendars.
Students who are MOWR must take a total of four (4) courses each semester. Students can take any combination of four (4) courses, i.e., one (1) MOWR class and three (3) JHS classes, etc.
After college advisement and MOWR scheduling is complete, an official copy of the student schedule must be delivered to your specific JHS Counselor (Brandy Corbett or Jamie Partain) or the JHS Distance Learning Coordinator (Anita Hayes). The state will NOT pay for your course(s) if this is not done!
Upon completion of a college course, students will receive a final letter grade from the college, and an official copy of this transcript must be reported to the JHS Registrar (Amber Sparks).
Spring semester MOWR students must report transcripts to JHS five (5) days before graduation in order to participate in graduation exercises. The MOWR student is entirely responsible for this task.
JHS will convert final letter grades from college courses to a numeric grade in the following manner: A+= 99, A=95, A- =90, B+=89, B=85, B- =80, C+=79, C=75, C- =70, D+=69, D=65, D- =60.
At JHS, an “F” is 69 or below, however, 60-69 is a “D” at many colleges. Therefore, if a student scores a 69 or below in a college class, JHS will accept the college credit even though the numerical conversion is failing. This failing numerical grade will count as is -- within your JHS cumulative GPA toward graduation. HOPE will transcribe this grade of 69 or below as 0 points on a 4.0 scale, and no HOPE points will be earned with a grade of 69 or below. Keep in mind that this will drop your overall HOPE GPA.
Per GADOE rules, MOWR students are exempt from taking many EOCs ONLY if he/she passes the class and receives credit. The courses that require an EOC are as follows: 9th Grade Lit and Composition, Algebra I, Coordinate Algebra, and Biology.
Student Athletes: The NCAA may or may not approve courses taken through a non-traditional format such as MOWR. It is up to the student and family to investigate NCAA regulations as they pertain to non-traditional courses.
During advisement for the 2017-2018 school year, JHS teachers will recommend students for classes at JHS. MOWR courses will NOT replace JHS classes until we receive an official college schedule from each student. As students are attempting to coordinate high school and college schedules, please keep in mind that the JHS master schedule is often not finalized until the summer prior to the opening of school. As a result, students may have to make changes in their MOWR schedule depending on when courses are taught at JHS.
If a student fails a college course while participating in MOWR, JHS will not allow the student to enroll in future MOWR coursework.
A student must FIRST contact his/her JHS Counselor (Brandy Corbett or Jamie Partain) or the JHS Distance Learning Coordinator (Anita Hayes) before changing or withdrawing from a MOWR course. If the student chooses to change (drop/add) courses, the high school counselors must first approve. If the student is allowed to withdraw “W” from a MOWR course, he/she must return to the high school and be enrolled in the high school course or credit recovery course that corresponds to the MOWR course. If the student withdraws “W” from the MOWR course and does not enroll in the corresponding high school course or credit recovery course, he/she could receive a 69 on his/her JHS transcript for that course.
To be eligible to participate in competitive activities or practices, students must abide by laws set forth by GHSA. Students must also consider whether games, practices, activities, etc., will interfere with the completion of postsecondary course requirements.
JHS Administration and/or Counselor(s) may request that the student sign a waiver if there are concerns regarding his/her participation in the MOWR program.
