Minutes

Tammy High (City of Birmingham) presided over the meeting andAlan Wallace (Jacksonville State University) was the meeting recorder.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 11at 11:00 a.m., at Old Overton Club.

OLD BUSINESS

  • Classroom Space
  • What should be escalated to the Executive Committee?
  • Mike sent a letter to Craig Boudreaux and Tim Townes stating the problems that we are encountering and a proposed solution to the problems.
  • Bill suggested using VM access for some classes. He has a proof of concept for this process. Mike suggested testing the process at Regions as well.
  • As of the December meeting there was still no response from the Executive Committee.
  • In the December meeting, Bill agreed to draft another email Craig Boudreaux (Executive Committee) to ask for an update on classroom spaces issue.
  • In the December meeting, Bill reported that he was able to create a VM on Amazon to support the MSFT SQL classes. He stated that the process was very straight forward. It took approximately 10 minutes to setup. He plans to research how that setup could be cloned or copied.
  • There are several classes where there is interest, but waiting classroom before scheduling. (Note: The Executive Committee wants us to obtain 3 estimates before deciding on an instructor for the class. The estimates need to be on business’ letterhead.)
  • DB2 training
  • Blake has a need for this class. Judy Nall of CBI usually offers a very reasonable flat rate for this class. Regions also has a need for this class.
  • COBOL training
  • Tammy High teaching, proposing a 3 day class.
  • Class may have to be held at ThinkData due to a lack of classroom space at Regions.
  • Mike will have a proposed date for this class within the next couple of months.
  • Membership
  • Discussions regarding the Members list:
  • Jefferson County – Bill received a reply from Roosevelt Butler requesting the current Executive Committee Meeting schedule. Bill sent him a copy of the meeting schedule and requested that a representative from Jefferson County attend the Education Committee meetings.
  • As of the December meeting there was no response from Jefferson County.
  • The use of the post office box was discussed. The invoice for membership fees this year asked that payments be sent to Liberty National. In the November meeting, it was agreed that next year invoices will ask that membership dues be sent to the PO Box.
  • Registration/Email/Web Site – Proposed Changes
  • Bill sent out an email ahead of the meeting regarding proposed changes to the registration, email notifications and web site.
  • Bill summarized the proposed changes for the committee.
  • If there are no objections raised, the changes will be posted to the BLUG website and emailed to BLUG members.

NEW BUSINESS

  • General Reminder: You can now use the website to register students.
  • There was interest in scheduling another PMP Exam prep class. Angeline will reach out to Rick Morris for dates and a contract.
  • Bill will move the courses we normally offer each year to the current schedule and propose dates.
  • Angeline needs additional students in the JAVA classes scheduled for January. If they do not register soon the classes will be canceled. She needs at least eight students in each class.
  • Nancy asked us to remove and from the BLUB mailing list.
  • An updated schedule will be sent.

The meeting was adjourned.
