Customer Web Site and System for Remote Appliance Control

Problem Description

Sea Breeze Home Safety Inc. designs, manufactures, and installs the Premier line of home security systems. These provide intruder alarms and automatic notification of police and fire departments. Sea Breeze does not provide any remote access to the home security system, nor to home appliances, something that customers are increasingly asking for.

People are frequently away from home and want web access the home security system. They want to be able to activate it or deactivate it remotely. (For example, they forgot to activate it, or they need to deactivate it to allow access for repair personnel). There is also an expanding market for remote control for home appliances. For example, turn on/off air conditioner, furnace, microwave oven, lights, TV. (Many people have pets and keep the pet entertained during the day by having the TV on). Other anticipated uses would be to check house temperature and humidity, and turn on/off lawn watering.

The wiring of the appliances in the home is easily accomplished by the Sea Breeze Installation Services division, and this will provide a data link to the current Premier Information System. However, the Sea Breeze Home Safety web site and Premier information system were not designed with these functions in mind.

Anticipated Benefits

The primary business benefit to be obtained from the new system is for Sea Breeze Home Safety to maintain its leadership in the home security market by providing web access, and to expand into new markets, attracting customers who are not primarily interested in home security but who do want the convenience of remote access to home appliances and devices. We expect to receive increased revenue from these expanded services.

System Capabilities

The Customer Remote Appliance Control system will provide the following capabilities:

·  Provide a web site for user interaction

·  Support end-user remote access to the Sea Breeze Home Safety Premier security system

·  Support remote access to and control over home appliances for customers

·  Support customer access via computer or PDA

·  Maintain database and history information to support market analysis

·  Provide a history of transactions for billing purposes

·  Be able to handle substantial increases in volume (300% or more) without performance degradation

·  Support 7x24 availability
