General Objective

The purpose of this component is to provide training for administrators in understanding the legal requirements in Florida pertaining to the education of LEP students. This component addresses five of thirteen specific objectives designed so that participants can better serve the needs of limited English proficient (LEP) students.

Specific Objectives

Upon completion of this component, participants will be able to

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and sensitivity to multicultural and diverse student populations; create a positive and supportive environment to accommodate the diverse cultural backgrounds of students.
  2. Recognize major differences and similarities among various cultural groups in the U.S., in Florida, and in the local community; counsel students, parents, school personnel and community members on these differences and similarities.
  3. Demonstrate ability to work cooperatively with the community and express to the community that its participation is wanted and needed.
  4. Develop cross-cultural awareness and understanding of the major cultural groups represented in the local school district, and at the individual schools, in order to meet the needs of LEP students within the context of a multicultural student population.
  5. Demonstrate ability to explain to LEP students what behavior is expected of them in American culture, in the district, and in the school.
  6. Use technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning. (ISTE/NETS*T V. A.)

Description of Activities

Learners attain specific objectives through presentation of content, interactive online activities, formative feedback, and interaction with the course facilitator during approximately ten hours of instructional activities and ten hours of clinical activities.

Evaluation of Participants

  1. Participating in the online Discussion Group
  2. Completing all Reflection Responses for the content information presented
  3. Completing all offline exercises to demonstratemastery of the content presented

Evaluation of Activity

An online evaluation for this activity will be conducted through the Santa Rosa Professional Growth System.
