The Opportunities:

China with a population of over 1.3 billion still offers plenty of opportunities for both sourcing products but also selling to the growing middle classes – which total about 300 Million people. There is a demand from Chinese companies and Sports organisers to use British expertise in the Sports & Leisure sector to supply International Sports events such as the World Student Games, F1 Grand Prix, Golf, Tennis and snooker tournaments. There are also opportunities in Sports R&D, Sports infrastructure, Sports Management, Fitness Centres/gyms, and expertise in the commercial use of stadia and of course football.

Opportunities are also available in the Marine and gardening sectors as well as other areas in the field of Sports & Leisure.

Shanghai

Shanghai is the largest city of mainland China with a population of about 20 Million. Originally a fishing and textiles town, it has now developed into a modern city and became the world’s largest port in 2005 in terms of cargo throughout, handling a total of 443 million tons of cargo. Shanghai is also regarded as the centre of finance and trade in mainland China.

Number of foreign companies in Shanghai: 48953

Total amount of investment: USD 267.64 billion (£ 133.82 b)

Shenzhen

Shenzhen is the financial capital of southern China with a population of 10 Million and is organising the World Student Games in 2011. A number of opportunities still exist to supply products/services to the Games.

Here is the website of the World Student Games:

www.sz2011.org/eng/index.htm

There are also a number of golf courses, stadia and other sports facilities in Shenzhen where British companies can use their expertise in the Sports & Leisure sector. Shenzhen is also less than an hour from Hong Kong which is often considered a gateway to the rest of China.

Shanghai and Shenzhen are two of China’s largest manufacturing areas. Therefore if West Midlands companies are looking to find Chinese firms to manufacture or source products then these cities have a large number of factories that they can work with.
