2018State 4-H Public Speaking Contest

There are two divisions for each age category (junior and senior)

  • A speech is a presentation using note cards only.
  • Visual presentations may be a demonstration (one person, not a team), illustrated talk or PowerPoint presentation.

The Junior Public Speaking Contest

Guidelines

  • Each county is invited to send one junior delegate (age 9-12 on 1/1/18) in the visual presentation category and one in the speech category.
  • Delegates from each county will compose the Junior Elite Speaker Corps.
  • 4-Hers must attend the day and give their presentation to receive recognition.
  • All presentations and speeches must be done individually and last 3-5 minutes.
  • All PowerPoint presentations must be submitted by the Monday prior to the contest.
  • Evaluations with notes from each judge will be sent to participants after the contest.

The Senior Public Speaking Contest

Guidelines

  • Each county may send one senior (age 13-18 on 1/1/18) delegate in the speech category and one in the visual presentation category.
  • 4-Hers must attend the day and give their presentation to receive recognition.
  • All presentations and speeches must be done individually and last 5-8 minutes.
  • All PowerPoint presentations must be submitted by the Monday prior to the contest.
  • The highest scoring senior speaker in each division will share their presentation during

the State 4-H Public Speaking ContestAwards Program.

  • Evaluations with notes from each judge will be sent to participants after the contest.

Evaluation for both age categories

  • Up to 2 judges will judge each presentation in each contest.
  • At the conclusion of each presentation, the judges will ask the speaker a question related to the speech topic, their 4-H experience or future plans.No questions from the audience.
  • Scores are averaged at the end of the contest.
  • Speakers not meeting the time requirement will be penalized.
  • All county delegates will receive recognition. The highest scoring speaker in each division

will receive special recognition.

The State Contest is March 3, Saturday in the W.B. Young Building of UConn’s Storrs Campus. The contest generally runs from 9am to noon. Specific contest information will be mailed/emailed the week of Feb 27.
