Ten Minute Meeting October 2014
All Bolded Items Require Member Action
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The purpose of the new language under modified day is that 3 bank times a month can be used for purposes determined by the site committee. As long as the fourth day during the month is reserved for professional prep time the committee can choose to use all three of the other times for a professional development, or really any combination of staff meetings, grade level meetings, or PD as determined by site needs.
- If there is a need to restructure PD time it needs to be negotiated and voted on by members (we need 66% to pass).
- Please let SMMCTA know if members are being asked to engage in PD outside of designated times.
GUESTS
Terry Deloria
Deloria addressed the Rep council with regard to the LCAP. (Local Control Accountability Plan) The state is requiring Districts to demonstrate accountability based on 8 criteria. In order to get better feedback this year, Ed Services needs to receive feedback from sites on three criteria for this year. A proposal was made for an Admin and a Rep (or other member chosen by teachers) from each site to be trained to present together a 20-minute power point, followed by a 20-minute teacher survey. Most reps agreed.
Ralph Mechur
The Union has supported Ralph and Ralph has supported us in the past. Ralph appreciates our support. The work we do together is not yet over. Ralph wants to be sure that our voice is always heard. He discussed the issues facing schools and measure ES. Mechur asked members to phone bank at his office for both Torlakson and Mechur anytime after school at:
Mechur Architects
3400 Airport Ave (building next to Spitfire grill)
Please call 310-398-1680 to let them know you are coming. Teachers’ voices are incredibly powerful.
GOALS
1. Improve communication
2. Increase member participation
Successes

- Cal Turn (Teachers Union Reform Network) senior. Administration and SMMCTA members met for 2 days to plan collaboratively and established a Steering Committee for implementation of LCAP and other mutual goals
Challenges:
- Maintaining an accurate email list of members.
- Please advise your SMMCTA Rep if you change your contact information so we may serve you better. Your reps will be asking you to update your information.
HEAT
This issue has been presented at every Board meeting. Heat is a district wide issue. We are asking for a 1,2, and 3-year plan from the Board. Special thanks to Edison who helped push this agenda. Please keep sending emails to your principals.
SMMCTA Conference Funds
There are funds available from SMMCTA for tuition (up to $800) for attending conferences. Please email your specific requests to: . Once approved you will be required to pay for it yourself and then submit your receipt. A new reimbursement form will be available soon.
CONTRACT
No individual unit member is allowed to negotiate the contract with administrators. This means that we must adhere to the contract days and hours of work. (I.e., members are not required and need not work during their lunch or planning periods). Administrators should NOT be using averages in determining class size. We will be “sun shining” our contract in December. We need to know your priorities for negotiations. Please respond to the new survey once it comes out prior to Winter Break.
