NEW GENERAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM

SUBMITTING COURSE MATERIALS TO GECCo & ARC

FALL 2016

1. Introduction

As the college-wide community moves towards implementation of the new General-Education Program, the members of ARC thought it would be beneficial to compile a brief document outlining the procedure for submitting materials for inclusion into the program. While more details are provided on both the ARC and GECCo websites, this is intended to serve as a ‘Cliff notes’ version of the submission process

·  The New General-Education Program will consist of the following Keystone categories:

o  First Year Seminar (Rep: Yvette Kisor)

o  Critical Reading and Writing 102 (Rep: Todd Barnes)

o  Studies in Arts and Humanities (Rep: Monika Giacoppe)

o  Social Science Inquiry (Rep: Leah Warner)

o  Quantitative Reasoning (Rep: Jim Gillespie)

o  Scientific Reasoning (Rep: Sarah Carberry)

o  Historical Perspectives (Rep:Pinar Kayaalp)

o  Global Awareness (Rep: Ruma Sen)

o  Experiential (Rep: Desi Budeva)

·  In addition, there are three Distribution Categories, a Mid-Career Reflection and Senior Presentation requirement:

o  Culture and Creativity (Rep: Bonnie Blake)

o  Values and Ethics (Rep: Lisa Cassidy)

o  Systems, Sustainability and Society (Rep: Eric Karlin)

o  Mid-Career Reflection (Rep: Nick Salter)

o  Senior Presentation (Rep: David Oh)

·  The Course Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes for the Keystone categories are outlined on the ARC website under Reports and Documents: (http://www.ramapo.edu/fa/files/2013/10/GEN-ED-OUTCOMES-Final-2-2.pdf)

·  Additional information regarding the New General Education Program can be found on the Provost’s website under Curriculum and Assessment (www.ramapo.edu/provost/ce-resources). Under the General Education Curriculum button, in the New Curriculum section, is a Criteria for General Education Courses document: (http://www.ramapo.edu/provost/files/2013/04/FAEC-and-DC-Agreement-5-11-16-1.docx)

·  In addition, the original General Education Task Force II report can be viewed at: http://www.ramapo.edu/provost/files/2013/04/REVISED-PROGRAM-2-GE_Task_Force_Report-Nov-19-2015.pdf

2. Required Materials for Gen-Ed Course Submission

·  Completed ARC form, with relevant signatures

o  Any new courses or course revision requires an ARC form, even if that course is for the new Gen-Ed program and will be submitted to GECCo first.

o  The 2016 ARC Form contains a box to indicate whether the course is to be part of the new Gen-Ed program and to state the Keystone category.

o  For administration/paperwork purposes, please fill in the left hand side of the ARC form for ‘new’ courses, even if you are modifying a current Gen-Ed course for the new Gen-Ed curriculum.

·  Course syllabi:

o  GECCo requires syllabi to include GE objectives, outcomes and a matrix (or bullet points) showing how course assignments would meet objectives and outcomes.

o  GECCo has created category-specific checklists that will aid in the preparation of the syllabi. These can be viewed on the GECCo website: (http://www.ramapo.edu/fa/files/2013/04/GECCo-Keystone_Courses-Checklist.pdf)

·  A cover letter:

o  Provide a brief rationale for whythe course meets the criteria of a Gen Ed course (course objectives, outcomes and course content) and how the course will reflect the conceptual framework, objectives, outcomes of the Gen Ed curriculum.

·  As per usual, both hard copies and electronic versions of the above materials are required

3. Procedure

·  Course materials for new Gen-Ed courses should be submitted directly to the appropriate GECCo Rep by October 15.

·  Upon submission of the course materials, GECCo will review the General-Education component of the course.

·  Once accepted, the GECCo chair will sign off on it and then forward the materials directly to ARC for complete review.

·  Note: The Course Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes for the three Distribution categories, Mid-Career reflection and Senior Seminar have yet to be finalized. As such, GECCo/ARC will NOT be accepting proposals for these categories by the October 15 deadline. A date will be set for their submission sometime later in the academic year.

4. Non Gen-Ed requests

·  The submission of materials not related to Gen-Ed, such as new courses/programs, and course and program revisions, should be given directly to your ARC rep by October 15.
