Announcement of Logo Design Competition
The Research and Learning Laboratory in Science, Mathematics and Social Studies Education (SSciMA) is interested in adopting a logo in order to create an appropriate visual identity. To this end, SSciMA is announcing a logo design competition for professionals, students and teams from graphic art, design, and related areas from EUC. Competition entries will be judged on the basis of identity definition, style, appeal, and adaptive use.
SSciMA was founded in 2007 at European University Cyprus. Its mission is to work with stakeholders of education in Cyprus – public and private education, teacher communities and educational and research institutions and services – to contribute towards the building of the necessary foundations to encourage innovative approaches in research, teaching and learning in Science, Mathematics and Social Studies Education. Scholars in the area of Education Sciences agree that solutions to issues related to supporting and promoting effective teaching and learning in Science, Mathematics and Social Studies Education lie in the close collaboration of teachers, school communities, public authorities and researchers, offering unique opportunities to share insight, knowledge, and commitment for the enhancement of the quality of early childhood, primary, secondary and university-level education in Cyprus. Logo Specifications:
-The logo should be relatively simple and scalable, so that it is readable in various sizes
-It should be unique so as to be recognizable and immediately associated with the Laboratory
-It should bear relation to what the Laboratory stands for
-It is used widely to identify the Laboratory in all instances, similar to a corporate logo
-It should be diachronic and not reflect any popular or ephemeral graphic design trends
-Tone of voice: formal-it could be playful
-If any characters or letters appear on the logo, these should be in Latin
The logo should consist of no more than 3 flat colors (pantones).
Eligibility:
All professional designers and design students can enter as individuals or as groups.
The number of submissions is unlimited.

7 May 2010 - Submission deadline
28 May 2010 - Announcement of results
Submission:
Logo design entries must be submitted either in person or by certified mail by May 7, 2010 at 13:00, c/o Dr. Loucas Louca at the Secretariat of the School of Arts and Education Sciences (to Ms. Maria Santis or Ms. Dora Tzialli), Office 207, located at European University Cyprus, 6 Diogenous Str., 1516 Engomi, Nicosia, Cyprus.
Submission Requirements:
-Each logo proposal (even produced by the same designer) should be submitted separately.
-Each logo proposal should be submitted in the following two ways:
-(1) 1 x A4 high quality printout in which the designer should present:
- The logo in colour (in large scale: 14x14 cm)
- The logo in colour (in small scale: 3x3 cm)
- The black and white version of the logo (6x6 cm)
At the back of the printout you must write your pseudonym.
(2) A vector format of the logo should also be submitted digitally on a CD (EPS or Adobe Illustrator Files / All type must be converted).
There should be no marks identifying the author in the submissions, other than a pseudonym. A separate sealed envelope should accompany the submission, containing a signed acceptance of the conditions of the contest, as per Appendix A, and the artist's full identification. The envelope should only bear the pseudonym on the outside.
Prize: A cash prize of 250 Euros will be awarded to the winning entry
Other conditions:
The Judging Committee, which will consist of three SSciMA Board Members and two Faculty Staff Members from the Department of Arts of EUC, shall not be obligated to award the prize, if it judges that none of the submitted entries adequately satisfies the criteria of identity definition, style, appeal, and adaptive use. The winning design will become the property of the SSciMA, which will own all rights for their use in any way without further compensation to the artist. None of the entered designs will be returned.

DECLARATION OF ACCEPTANCE
I hereby declare that I accept all terms of the contest for the logo design of the Research and Learning Laboratory in Science, Mathematics and Social Studies Education.
The designs I am submitting are my original works and have not been used elsewhere.
I undertake to indemnify the Research and Learning Laboratory in Science, Mathematics and Social Studies Education fully against any claims of copyright ownership of the designs or their original idea by third parties.
