Does clothing make you a better person or worker? Men and women in the armed services are proud to wear their uniforms. Other adults choose jobs that require them to wear uniforms. However, I see no reason why high school students should be forced to do so. Morale at the school, preparation for the workplace, and irresponsible choices in clothes are reasons given by the school board to instate a dress code;however, most of the students at Greeneville High School agree with me that requiring us to wear school uniforms is a policy that would harm our school, not benefit it. / attention grabber

Highlight in 2 different colors the 2 other support and elaboration strategies used. Label thesein the right-sided box. Find/change/insert a concluding sentence.

The school board has good intentions in wanting to address problems with morale in our school. In other words, I believe that wearing look-alike clothes would most likely damage student morale, not raise it. The idea, however, that a uniform requirement is the solution might be misguided. For example, at a time in our lives when we want to feel that we are individuals-unique- to be forced to wear uniforms is to be forced into chains of conformity. When I was in kindergarten through fifth grade, I had to wear a school uniform. My friends and I never stopped wanting to wear other kinds of clothes. On rare free-dress days, we could wear whatever we wanted. When we were out of uniform, our conduct and academic performance were no different than on days when we had to dress alike. If anything, we were more alert and energized when we were allowed to dress “as ourselves.”

Another reason the high school uniform policy is a bad idea is that wearing a uniform would do nothing to help us prepare for the real world. To explain, wearing a uniform does not make you a good worker. For example, in most jobs, you are expected to make good decisions about the appropriate kind of clothes to wear. The problem is, school uniforms, in effect make, the decision for us. As my Mom was preparing to wash my and my brother's school uniforms, she only had to wash one load of clothes because all the colors were dark. There were blue, black, and brown pants with blue, black, and brown sweaters. What decision making skills did I have to employ to select my dress for the day! Because the school board has made these appropriate decisions for me, I have no idea what skills are needed to select appropriate dress for the workplace. I truly hope my future employer has a similar dress code.

Additionally. wearing a uniform in high school is both expensive and demeaning. To explain, For example, When I wore a uniform as a child, my parents spent a lot of money on school clothes and on clothes that I could not wear after school and on weekends. More harmful than this double expense, however, is the suggestion that students who are almost adults cannot be trusted to make responsible choices about what to wear.

Like the school board, I do believe that we should address low morale and poor academic performance. However, I also believe that the answers are not as easy as a colored shirt and navy pants. I ask that the school board members and students take a close look at our school’s problems and look for practical answers together. Meanwhile, please do not restrict our ability to express ourselves as individuals.
