The school board has good intentions in wanting to address problems with morale in our school. In other words, I believe that wearing look-alike clothes would most likely damage student morale, not raise it. The idea, however, that a uniform requirement is the solution might be misguided. For example, at a time in our lives when we want to feel that we are individuals-unique- to be forced to wear uniforms is to be forced into chains of conformity. When I was in kindergarten through fifth grade, I had to wear a school uniform. My friends and I never stopped wanting to wear other kinds of clothes. On rare free-dress days, we could wear whatever we wanted. When we were out of uniform, our conduct and academic performance were no different than on days when we had to dress alike. If anything, we were more alert and energized when we were allowed to dress “as ourselves.”

To explain, wearing a uniform does not make you a good worker. For example, in most jobs, you are expected to make good decisions about the appropriate kind of clothes to wear. The problem is, school uniforms, in effect make, the decision for us. As my Mom was preparing to wash my and my brother's school uniforms, she only had to wash one load of clothes because all the colors were dark. There were blue, black, and brown pants with blue, black, and brown sweaters. What decision making skills did I have to employ to select my dress for the day! Because the school board has made these appropriate decisions for me, I have no idea what skills are needed to select appropriate dress for the workplace. I truly hope my future employer has a similar dress code.
