Benefit of the Activity:
  • Climbing is easily manipulated to encourage goal setting learning strategies, which can then be transferred to another medium.
  • The activity may encourage the expansion of comfort zones and could lead to better confidence.
  • Through the use of peer encouragement and peer belaying, team cohesiveness and teamwork skills can be learned.
  • Climbing is a very exciting and enjoyable activity.
  • The activity requires participants to use clear communication and can develop personal communication strategies.
  • The activity links in well to the nation curriculum as both an intellectual and physical challenge.
  • Climbing as a sport often requires the participant to work out how and engage in solutions in order to get higher which could lead to better problem solving skills in the future.
  • The session can be a good introductory into climbing movements and rope technical skills.

“De-gloving” of skin from hand from jewellery or watch being caught / Low / Participants / All watches and jewellery should be removed prior session. Climbing holds selected for use on the wall are chosen to reduce or remove chance of a de-gloving incident. The wall is inspected quarterly for hazards. / If unable to remove ring, tape is to be wrapped round the ring. Tape stored at tower and in the first aid kits.
Participant error / Low / Participants / All instructors should be trained and give physical demonstration of correct belaying techniques. All instructors should hold relevant NGBs and or been assessed for site specific competency.Slip Knots should be tied into the dead rope for every 2 meters the climber ascends. / The karabiner attaching the dynamic rope to the participant’s harness should be physically checked by instructor.
Injury caused by falling object / Low / All / Participants to remove any objects that may become a potential hazard when climbing. / Helmets to be warn in areas of potential falling object hazard.
