Volunteer and Visitor Services Coordinator
Job Description
Summary:
This position is responsible for coordinating volunteers, public spaces and public enjoyment of theWells Reserve at Laudholm, as well as targeted community outreach. Tasks include the following: recruiting, training, and coordinating all volunteers in support of the mission of the Wells Reserve at Laudholm; overseeing the operation and staffing of the Visitor Center; coordinating outreach efforts to civic and community organizations; and coordinating and/or assisting with events.The Wells Reserve at Laudholm has 400 volunteers and over 25,000 visitors annually. The Volunteer and Visitor Services Coordinator reports to the Director of the Wells Reserve.
Volunteer Program Responsibilities
- Oversee recruitment and placement of new volunteers.
- Meet with new volunteers to determine their interests and link them with appropriate program staff.
- Design and conduct volunteer orientation and training programs.
- Assist with the organization of volunteer recognition programs and events.
- Apply for and coordinate AmeriCorps teams, Volunteers for Peace, United Way Days of Caring, and other workplace and school service projects.
- Maintain accurate electronic volunteer records and files.
- Nurture relationships and maintain communication with volunteers.
- Compile semi-annual reports of activities and volunteer hours; maintain records.
- Stay current on volunteer issues, including liability and legal issues.
- Produce, update, and distribute volunteer handbook.
- Be a resource for volunteers and create an environment in which they feel valued and appreciated.
- Send regular email updates to volunteers.
Visitor Services and Natural Resource/Site-related Responsibilities
- Oversee operation of the Visitor Center, including scheduling volunteers.
- Hire and supervise paid weekend staff attendants in Visitor Center and Parking Booth (May through October).
- Oversee exhibit areas and other public spaces and ensure brochures and other information are available to the public. Assess condition of exhibit areas and other public spaces and report needs to appropriate staff.
- Work with Education Director, Communications Director, and Library Advisory Committee on the Coastal Resource Library operation.
- Coordinate and/or assist with natural resource and site-related issues (such as recycling program, Healthy Beaches, Piping Plovers, SEANET).
- Monitor trail-related issues such as trail safety and condition, and communicate with volunteer rangers and the Natural Resource Specialist on any needs.
- Coordinate and interact with Rangers and the Natural Resource Specialist on habitat and resource management activities.
Events and Community Outreach Responsibilities
- Assist with fundraising events.
- Assist with education/outreach events.
- Coordinate the annual Bird Seed Sale.
- Represent the Wells Reserve at Laudholm to civic and community organizations.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Graduation from college with a BS or BA degree.
Experience: Two-plus years of experience are required in an administrative, customer service, education or volunteer coordination position, including experience with volunteer management/recruitment and/or community outreach. Good oral and written communication skills are required. Comfort with Microsoft Office products is required. Knowledge of conservation and environmental issues a plus.
License/Certification: Must have a valid driver’s license.
Special Qualifications:Strong preference will be given to applicants who have knowledge of the local area. Must enjoy working with people of diverse ages, interests, and backgrounds.
Annual Schedule and Compensations: The Volunteer and Visitor Services Coordinator will be expected to work 1,248 hours over the course of a year (.6 Full-Time Equivalent), concentrating almost all of that time April through mid-December. As a .6 FTE, this position is granted a range of pro-rated benefits, and paid time off including vacation and sick leave and 7 paid holidays between April and mid-December. Salary is commensurate with experience.
