This application has three sections. Complete Section I if you completed a formal postdoctoral training program in forensic psychology that is listed in the document “Postdoctoral Training Programs in Forensic Psychology Accepted for Experience Waiver” on the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) website in the Forensic Psychology section. This document is revised regularly as additional programs are reviewed and accepted for listing. For details regarding the listing criteria and the process through which training directors may submit applications for listing, please refer to the document “Experience Waiver and Postdoctoral Training in Forensic Psychology Guidelines,” which also is available on the ABPP website in the Forensic Psychology section.
Complete Sections II and III if you did NOT complete a postdoctoral training program in forensic psychology that already has been accepted by ABFP for the five-year experience waiver and has been listed in the document cited above. Candidates must complete either Section I OR both Sections II and III. No candidate should complete all three sections.

Section II: Experience in Forensic Psychology
You must document a minimum of 1000 hours of experience in forensic psychology over a minimum of a five-year period AFTER YOUR DOCTORAL DEGREE WAS AWARDED. An earned LL.B. or J.D. degree may be substituted for two of the five years of experience; however, the requirement of 1000 hours of experience must still be met. Do NOT include predoctoral experience or employment to meet this requirement. Begin with your most recent position and work backwards until you have documented 1000 hours. It is not necessary to document additional hours in excess of 1000.

Section III: Specialized Training in Forensic Psychology
You must document a minimum of 100 hours of specialized training in forensic psychology AFTER YOUR DOCTORAL DEGREE WAS AWARDED. Do NOT include pre-doctoral training to meet this requirement. This requirement is typically met through continuing education courses, but can also be met through direct supervision (face to face hours with supervisor dealing exclusively with forensic work), and/or formal graduate-level coursework completed after your doctoral degree was awarded. Do NOT include classes taken prior to earning your doctoral degree.

The general requirements for the awarding of the certificate of Forensic Psychology are:
(1) Satisfactory completion of the credential review process, written examination, oral examination, and vote by the Board to accept the candidate into membership; and
(2) Absence of prior conduct by the candidate that in the opinion of the Board indicates serious ethical misconduct or unlawful behavior incompatible with the high standards of competence expected for board certification.
The Candidate also has an affirmative duty to notify the Board during the pendency of his or her candidacy if allegations of serious ethical misconduct or unlawful behavior have been lodged against the Candidate.
