What would you do?

2.) In this situation I would most likely give my employees their salary increase. Giving the employees a salary increase will create a positive environment and will improve moral and hopefully make them feel that they are making progress within the company. This will help make the employees use their time wisely and work just as hard for potential raises in the future. Loyalty to employees is important to having a successful business, and if the question arises during the interview process as to why my costs are slightly about average, that is what I would tell them.

3.) I would probably ask to meet up with Sofia in my office and tell her the truth as to why I brought her to talk (seeing the emails) and apologize if things aren’t going well for her. I would then ask if she would be willing to talk about the aspects of the job she hates while at the same time reassuring her that I am only concerned about her. If she is willing to talk, I would listen and try to see if I can help her with anything in my power. If she mentions that she is still looking for another job anyway, I would say that I would be a reference because she is a hard worker and has the ability to learn quickly. I would begin collected looking at applications for potential replacements, but would not act upon them until Sofia tells me that she is leaving.

IBM-A Front-Runner in Sustainability

1.)Present three strong arguments that IBM might have used to justify the start of its sustainability programs in the 1970s.

  1. Company appearance to customers and the world would be positive if sustainability programs are implemented
  2. Reduction of materials used and recycling of materials could save the company time and money
  3. The impact on the environment would be significantly reduced.

2.)What major goals has IBM achieved in environmental stewardship?

  1. Reduction of on its reliance of toxic chemicals and reduction of its waste.
  2. Awareness and involvement of protecting the environment and the ozone.
  3. Become a leader in both technology and environmental awareness

3.)How might IBM leverage its leaderships in sustainability to maintain its competitiveness in the IT market?

  1. One mention was of IBM working with the International Organization for Standardization. It can leverage ISO certification which allows it to meet the requirements first and maintain market shares while at the same time increasing its revenue.

Is There a Place for Ethics in IT?

1.)How might a CIO handle Schrage’s Scenarios? Like some of the suggestions given back to Schrage, find ways to be open to employees and develop loyalty with them. If you know that once a project is completed and that there is a good likelihood that a number of employees will be laid-off, you should tell them. It shows at least the company will let you have some time to look for other jobs and not just cut you outright, but I would still try to find ways to limit the number of people who would be laid-off. Another, is to be open to employees if they have topics they need to discuss and all bosses must be able to adaptive to different scenarios.

2.)Discuss the possible short-term losses/long-term gains in implementing ethical solutions. For the CRM scenario: short-term you loss multiple employees due to layoff, but long-term can potentially provide benefits to other employees who stay within the company and appear to be honest about what will happen within the company. For the boss scenario: short-term there may be more stress in the work place but long-term the employee is viewed as an honest individual and will be trusted more in the future.

3.)Must businesses choose between good ethics and financial benefits? Businesses should choose good ethics instead of financial benefits. The reason is that the company will look better in the eyes of the public and they choose financial benefits over good ethics then they may loss more money and employees like in the CRM scenario.

4.)What does Schrage mean when he says that CIOs “should stop trying to do the ‘right thing’ when implementing IT and focus instead on getting their implementation right?” I believe Schrage feels like the managers and high officers should focus more on the finishing of projects to propel the company forward and less time on every little ethic problem. I don’t really agree with his outlook because a lot of the problems can be solved quickly and if the company and its employees focus on good ethics there will be less problems and trust issues in the future.
