NLUCA Governing Council Report 2011

CHAPTER REPORT for ICA NOVEMBER 10, 2011

Governing Council Meeting

National Louis University Counseling Association (NLUCA)

NLUCA continues its progression and growth. In May our new leadership team assumed their positions in our organization. We are fortunate to have had a smooth transition to our new leadership and are continuing to grow and accomplish many new goals!

Our new ICA chapter president, Holly Fisher, has shown an incredible amount of diligence and leadership as she continues to lead our organization to success. Our leadership team and sponsors have been extremely dedicated in expanding the number of our members and as a result, our membership has increased by 47%. In addition, our leadership team and faculty member sponsors, Dr. Anna Marie Yates and Dr. Susan Kerstein, have worked together to provide NLUCA with a myriad of educational and networking opportunities for our members.

On June 6, 2011 NLUCA was fortunate to have Dr. Julie Robinson at our Lisle campus to present the workshop “Looking Through the Eyes of Children: Introduction to Play Therapy”. This workshop for NLUCA members focused on the theory and practice of utilizing play therapy. It was very informative and enlightening but since Dr. Robinson was able to impart only a fraction of the many aspects of play therapy we plan to have a another session in 2012 to delve deeper into the subject.

We also had the distinct pleasure of having Prospect High School Counselor, Dr. Mary Pinski, introduce and educate our members on the Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) on September 29, 2011. We were informed about the precise application process including the vision, mission, philosophy, and goals of RAMP and the importance of working as a team. This was a great introduction and especially informative for those of our members interested in school counseling.

This winter, we are planning on participating in a community service day event sponsored by National Louis University’s Civic Engagement Center. NLUCA members will be volunteering in various capacities at Cornerstone Community Outreach. We look forward to this opportunity to serve and to give back to the community.

Dr. Yates and Dr. Kerstein, our faculty sponsors, will be presenters at the Leadership Development Academy on Thursday of the Conference. Their topic is “Issues of Confidence for Emerging Leaders Using a Strengths-Based Leadership Approach.”

Finally, we are very lucky to have very active faculty sponsors and a cohesive leadership team which allows our organization to pursue our mission by exploring new opportunities to get the word out such as the creation of an NLUCA website and continuing to attain quality presenters to educate our membership.

We are looking forward to the continuedopportunities the future brings for NLUCA.
