LEARNING SUPPORT ASSISTANT

General Description of Post

A Learning Support Assistant is an integrated member of the School Staff Team. They are appointed to be deployed under the direction of the SENCo, to use their skills to assist the classroom teacher to create an educational environment in which to promote a pupil’s all round development in accordance with the School/College’s Improvement Plan.

Core Activities

1  To provide support for an individual pupil with an Educational Health Care Plan.

2  To assist the teacher in the delivery of the agreed educational plan, upon which the postholder will be briefed.

3  Support learning activities, especially Literacy, Numeracy, Social Skills and emotional health.

4  Be a fully integrated member of the school’s staff team and as such have responsibility for working to agreed school policies and procedures.

5  Be aware of school and statutory frameworks that directly impact on their own work with pupils.

6  Help prepare, monitor and maintain a safe and secure learning environment. Prepare learning materials; monitor the condition of learning resources to ensure adequate stocks in good condition.

7  Develop positive relationships with colleagues by working effectively as a member of the School Staff Team.

8  Develop and maintain relationships with other professionals.


Support the School by:-

1  Assisting with learning activities with either individuals or groups of pupils ensuring their safety and facilitating their physical, emotional and educational development.

2  Developing inclusion by facilitating participation and learning, help build confidence, self-esteem, a sense of independence, understanding of diversity and access to the curriculum so that all pupils are enabled to reach their full potential alongside their peers.

3  Ensuring equal access to learning and development opportunities and carry out predetermined educational activities and work programmes whilst promoting independent learning.

4  Encouraging a high standard of behaviour, develop relationships with others and recognise and deal with emotions in an appropriate way.

5  Establishing, developing, monitoring and maintaining positive relationships.

6  Being prepared to be attached to a specific department.

7  Assisting in the delivery of appropriate activities to meet the learning objectives, for individuals and groups of children.

8  Assist with the monitoring of individual pupils and provide feedback on their engagement on activities and their achievement of the desired learning objectives.

9  Observing and reporting on pupil performance, contribute to maintaining pupils records and keep such records as are required by the school.

10  Identifying and addressing signs of conflict and notifying others so that a resolution can be accomplished.

11  Organising individual lessons and activities by setting out learning materials and resources in line with lesson plans and pupil’s passport.

12  Assisting with outdoor activities and tasks.

13  Being aware and upholding the school’s policies and procedures, and when appropriate contribute to the development of them.

14  Being aware of confidentiality issues linked to home/pupil/teacher/school work and to keep confidences as appropriate.

15  Participating in appropriate school-based meetings and training activities.

16  Provide practical support to Classroom Assistants.

17  In accordance with the school’s guidance and policies, provide comfort and care in case of minor accident and upsets – reporting serious problems to appropriate person for action.

18  Undertake any other curriculum and counselling duties, which may reasonably be regarded as within the nature of the duties and responsibilities/grade of the post as defined, subject to the proviso that any changes of a permanent nature shall be incorporated into the job description in specific terms, following consultation with the recognised Trade Unions.

Knowledge and Skills

Ø  Knowledge of Child Protection and Health and Safety regulations.

Ø  Have the ability to undertake personal development.

Ø  A high standard of Literacy and Numeracy skills.

Qualifications

Ø  A minimum of two years’ of working with children in a learning environment or relevant NVQ qualification.
