FORESTPOSTER CONTEST FOR BC STUDENTS

BC communities are gearing up for National Forest Week whose theme this year is "Canada's Forests, A Fine Balance".

To honor the over 75-year-old National Forest Week tradition set for

May 2 –8 this year, FORED BC will offer a poster contest for students. Posters should reflect the theme and illustrate biodiversity and its importance to the long-term health of our forests. The winning entry from the three categories of primary, intermediate and secondary will each collect a $50 prize from FORED BC.

FORED BC is a non-profit environmental education association helping teachers and students understand cultural and economic values of our natural environment. Through this work, we build citizenship skills for responsible, active participation in environmental decisions.

Other events to recognize National Forest Week are being held by local forest companies, Ministry of Forests offices and community groups independent of FORED BC.

The event began in the 1920s as Forest Fire Prevention Week and evolved to its present form to provide a wide range of forest information and regional activities. The goals are to raise national awareness of forests’ importance and promote their careful management for present and future needs.

Deadline for poster submission is April 23, 2004. Posters should be on 11x17 paper and reflect the National Forest Week theme. Any type of artistic medium may be used, i.e. pencil, crayon, paint, mural, collage etc. Students should note their name, grade, school, and school address, phone and fax number on the back of all posters. All posters become the property of FORED BC. Winners of the provincial poster contest will be forwarded to the CFA for a national contest to be held in summer with a first prize of $200.
