Job Title:Senior Physiotherapist

Job Location:St Michael’s Hospice

Responsible to:Day Services Manager

Accountable to:Head of Clinical Services

1.0JOB SUMMARY

The post holder will be part of the Hospice Re enablementand Fitness Service providing high quality care to individuals who are referred to our services within our In Patient Unit, Day Serviceand/or domiciliary setting. To plan, deliver and evaluate physiotherapy intervention in partnership with MDT colleagues; and together lead the planning, delivery and evaluation of all elements of the programme.

The post holder will be responsible for the management of junior therapy staff and students when required.

2.0PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

2.1To be professional and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of individuals in your care. To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the individuals under your management, and support junior staff to do likewise.

2.2To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form an accurate diagnosis and prognoses in a wide range of highly complex conditions, to recommend the best course of intervention, and to develop comprehensive management plans.

2.3To represent the Hospice externally (locally, regionally and nationally) regarding physiotherapy services provided to individuals within your speciality.

2.4To undertake the comprehensive assessment of individuals, including those with a complex presentation, using investigative and analytical skills, and to formulate individualised management and treatment plans, using advanced clinical reasoning, and utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options to formulate a specialised programme of care.

2.5To regularly participate in developing policies which will impact on all service users

2.6To work with the Day Services Manager and other members of the MDT in developing the strategic and operational management of the re enablement service.

2.7To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers and other professionals, to promote understanding of the aims of physiotherapy, and to ensure a consistent approach to individuals care.

2.8To train, supervise and performance manages more junior staff where necessary, assistants and students. This will include the use of formal appraisal documentation.Working collaboratively with the Day Services Manager.

2.9To communicate effectively with patients and carers to maximise rehabilitation and re enablement potential and to ensure understanding of condition.

2.10To assess capacity, gain valid informed consent and have the ability to work within a legal framework with individuals who lack capacity to consent to treatment.

Professional

3.0To maintain own clinical professional development (CPD) by keeping abreast of any new trends and developments, and incorporate them as necessary into your work.

3.1To be an active member of the in-service training programme by attendance at/or participation in in-service training programmes, presentations and training sessions, staff meetings, tutorials, training sessions in house and by attending external courses and practising reflective practice.

3.2To undertake the measurement and evaluation of your work and current practices through the use of Evidence Based Practice projects, audit, research and outcome measures, either individually or with colleagues or with clinical specialist or manager. Make recommendations for change.

3.3To demonstrate a sound understanding of Clinical Governance and Risk Management and apply to work situation.

3.4To observe and adhere to the Code of Practice and Rules of Professional conduct laid down by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

Organisational

4.0To decide priorities for own work area, balancing other individuals related and professional demands, and ensure that these remain in accordance with those of the section as a whole.

4.1To be responsible for ensuring the effective selection and use of all treatment resources available both in the department and in primary care/community.

4.2To be responsible for equipment used in carrying out physiotherapy duties, and to adhere to Hospice policy, including competence to use equipment and to ensure the safe use of equipment by others through, teaching, training and supervision of practice.

4.3To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date documentation, inline with legal and departmental requirements, and communicate

assessment and treatment results to the appropriate disciplines in the form of reports and letters.

4.4To be actively involved in the collection of appropriate data and statistics for the use of the department.

4.5To be aware of Health and Safety aspects of your work and implement any policies, which may be required to improve the safety of your work area, including your prompt recording and reporting of accidents to senior staff, and ensuring that equipment use is safe.

4.6To comply with the organisational and departmental policies and procedures, and to be involved in the reviewing and updating as appropriate.

4.7To undertake any other duties that might be considered appropriate by the Day Services Manager.

4.8Demonstrate commitment to Hospice principles and flexible working patterns, to meet the needs of the service and staff

4.9Tackle discrimination and harassment, and promote equality and diversity in the workplace

4.10Reduce sickness absence; work place accidents; and promote zero tolerance on violence against staff

4.11Take responsibility for personal development and education and the development of a Personal Development Plan

4.12Carry out regular appraisals for staff, ensuring business goals are clearly communicated and linked to objectives

4.13Review training and development of relevant staff, so all relevant staff have a personal development plan, and support staff in reaching their full potential as identified through the appraisal process

Control of Infection

5.0Be aware of, and comply with, all Hospice infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. To undertake annual training/updates in infection prevention and control.

5.1Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that he/she is responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence based practice and maintaining patient safety.

Communication and Working Relationships

6.0The post holder will be required to develop effective communication and good working relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, outside agencies, families and carers.

7.0ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

7.9To ensure that the disclosure and use of confidential staff information is both lawful and ethical, and to recognise own responsibility for compliance with relevant legislation.

7.10To promote, at all levels, the Company’s vision, values and strategic objectives.
