Job Summary
The barista will carry out duties within any of the Catering Operations working areas and undertake customer service, cash handling, cleaning, food and beverage service and all other required duties to ensure the smooth running of an area or catering service.
Main Duties
Customer Service:
- To build relationships and deliver excellent customer service by acting with a “Customer comes first” attitude engaging the customer in conversation and connecting with them when possible.
- To provide a polite, courteous, responsive and professional service to all customers. To respond to customer needs and provide product sampling, liaising with Team Leaders, when applicable.
- To ensure that a high standard of personal appearance and standard of hygiene is consistently maintained at all times. This includes wearing the correct protective clothing as set down by HAS and SUUG policies and procedures.
- To ensure the highest standard of food presentation at all times. To maintain a clean and organised workspace so that colleagues can locate resources and products as needed. Performs cleaning tasks to a high standard at all times, following standard operating procedures and ensuring a clean environment.
- To ensure a close working relationship with all members of staff in particular; Supervisors, SU colleagues and University staff.
Business Requirements:
- Provide Quality beverages, whole bean, and food products consistently for all customers by adhering to all recipe and presentation standards. Ensuring all operating manuals and specifications are adhered to all times.
- To ensure all equipment failure and hazards are reported to the Manager/Supervisor upon detection.
- To ensure a correct standard of stock rotation is followed, making sure food products are used prior to the best before date
- To ensure all portion controls are adhered to as directed by the Manager/Supervisor and standard performance manuals.
- To ensure that all basic food preparation conform to standards set down in operating manuals an specifications.
- Maintaining a strict control on all food wastage and reporting any in the correct manner and completing any documentation as appropriate.
- To ensure food retention samples are taken and recorded, where applicable, along with the correct storage as laid down in the codes of practice and as directed by the Manager/Supervisor.
- To conform to all health/ Food safety codes of practice and C.O.S.H.H regulations, ensuring that they are adhered to at all times.
- To operate EPOS terminals including the safe custody of money and its return to the appropriate person.
- In areas where appropriate or as directed by the Manager/Supervisor to secure areas if and when required
- The regular removal of rubbish as necessary from areas of the workplace.
Team Work
- Attend all team briefs/1 to 1s/ training and departmental meetings as required and to contribute to the objectives of the Commercial Services team for increasing sales.
- To assist with the improvement of profit margins by up-selling products and making recommendations to customers.
- To actively be involved in an annual personal development review with your manager, and be expected to undertake a full and active part any training and development identified to enable you to carry out your work effectively, contributing to Hospitality and Accommodation services business objectives.
- Communicate with your fellow colleagues to ensure you know are always aware of any positives or issues within the operation.
- To undertake any other reasonable duties/ requests (other than those stated in the job description) as requested from a Senior Member of Staff.
Person Specification
Desirable experience:
-Experience in a retail / restaurant / Barista Skills
-Food Safety First Level (Basic Food Hygiene Certificate)
-Experience working with the general public in a customer service environment
-EPoS (till usage)
Essential:
-A good standard of basic literacy and numeracy.
-The ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a courteous manner is essential, as is the ability to understand and describe products and services to others. – Essential
-The ability to work independently on own initiative, and co-operatively within a team environment.
-The ability to work under pressure
-Awareness of the Health and Safety at Work Act, COSHH regulations, Manual Handling good practice.
*Compulsory on the job training will be provided in all areas with regular refresher training.
