Reading / Writing
Comprehension Strategy: Summarising
We are beginning our 2 weekunit on Summarising. During this time, students may:
retell the story
use text features (titles, headings, captions, graphic features)
summarise the text including the main events
recognise cause and effect relationships
compare and contrast between texts.

In Week 4, students will start to investigateNarratives. They may discuss the purpose and genres of different Narrative texts and what makes a good story. Children will share some of their favourite stories and identify the features that help increase the enjoyment of a story.
Spelling
Each week, the students will have 10 weekly spelling words that they will continue to practise during the week. The phonemes we will be investigating this week are/oo/. The main graphemes include: oo (book) and u (bush).
The spelling program is differentiated according to your child’s needs.

Thisunitis the start of a 4 week Number unit. Students may:
differentiate between the numerator and the denominator
compare, order and represent decimal fractions and common fractions
use financial mathematics to compare, order and represent decimal fractions
This unit will then move on into probability, financial literacy and proportions using fractions, decimals, percentages and ratios. / Students will be continuing their inquiry into Chemical Science.
During Week 4, students may:
  • pose questions to clarify practical problems or inform a scientific investigation, and predict what the findings of an investigation might be
  • plan appropriate investigation methods to answer questions or solve problems
  • decide which variable should be changed and measured in fair tests, and accurately observe, measure and record data, using digital technologies where appropriate
  • use equipment and materials safely, identifying potential risks.

Wellbeing / Congratulations!
Circle Time focus:
The Grade 5 teachers are spending time reflecting on the Attitudes to School Survey, with children completing a Survey Monkey (online survey) to compare to results from earlier in the year. Darren Crawcour has begun a leadership course (RAP Ambassadors) with our students, preparing them for the many leadership opportunities offered in 2017. / The Grade 5 Team would like to congratulate Lucas on his engagement to the lovely Danielle over the school holidays. Lucas, just so you know, we are available for Bridesmaid duties whenever you need!

Notices:
-For our Inquiry Unit in Term 4, we will require approximately 15 shoe boxes per grade. If you have any spare empty shoe boxes lying around at home then it would be greatly appreciated if you could send them to school with your child.
-Please let your child’s teacher know if they will be attending school on Monday the 31st of October as we will be running a modified program on that day.
