Dear Centre Course Manager
Notification of changes to the insurance criteria for Centres outside of the United Kingdom
Sports Leaders UK’s qualifications are accredited on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) covering England, Wales and Northern Ireland and recognised for some purposes in Scotland. All organisations and groups that want to deliver our qualifications are required to meet the criteria set out by the regulators of RQF qualification, whether they are based in the UK or not.
As you will know, to deliver a Sports Leaders UK qualification an organisation must first become an Approved Assessment Centre (AAC). One of the criteria for becoming an AAC is to provide suitable insurance cover for both the venue and tutors involved in course delivery. Insurance must also be provided to protect the learner if a participant is injured whilst they are participating in the course. Sports Leaders UK held a recent review meeting with our insurers to guarantee that regulatory criteria for proper insurance cover being met. The meeting identified that learners undertaking leadership training outside of the UK may require alternative or additional cover.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
If your centre is a British base overseas existing insurance arrangements give appropriate cover to participants whether they are British passport holders or not. This is due to the fact that the base will in most instances be deemed to be a sovereign base and be and therefore constitute UK soil. In these circumstances you need only to continue what you are already doing.
If your Centre is not deemed a British base overseas then you must take immediate action. All organisations outside of the UK must provide their own Public Liability Insurance for each learner to provide them with adequate cover whilst they are leading other people. Appropriate insurance arrangements must also comply with any home country requirements. You should check home and country requirements and arrange Public Liability Insurance for each learner as stipulated for the duration of the programme of training and assessment to cover all training and assessment situations.
Sports Leaders UK will require evidence that this insurance is current and active as a condition of accreditation to becoming an AAC.
· A declaration form is attached for the Centre Course Manager (or other appropriate person) to sign and return in relation to the outlined changes
· This condition is in addition to the venue and tutor/assessor insurance that are compulsory to becoming an accredited AAC (sections 3 and 4 of the AAC application)
· This condition applies to all existing and future AACs
· Sports Leaders UK will not be able to issue learner certificates until the attached declaration form has been satisfactorily completed and returned.
This policy is active with immediate effect. All AACs are advised to contact their local broker to cover indemnity and the sports leadership syllabus that is being delivered to your learners.
If you require any further information or support regarding this revised policy statement then please contact me on 01908 689180 or via email at
Yours sincerely,
Lucy Supperstone

INSURANCE DECLARATION FORM
Amendment to the AAC Application Form (AAC 1)
Section 5 – Insurance for Centres outside the UK
5.1 Insurance
Sports Leaders UK recognises the importance of appropriate insurance cover for all sports leaders. All Centres outside of the UK are required to provide Public Liability Insurance (or an equivalent policy) to cover every learner undertaking a Sports Leaders UK qualification.
The AAC is required to have appropriate insurance covering a learner:
· During the course including any demonstration of leadership supervised by the AAC
· Once they qualified as a sports leader and remain the responsibility of the AAC
If someone else is injured or their property is damaged, they may blame the learner/sports leader and decide to sue them for damages. Should this happen, the Public Liability Insurance will cover the learner/sports leader and meet the legal costs of lawyers who will act in their defence.
If a learner undertakes their demonstration of leadership hours with an organisation not connected to the AAC, that external organisation will also need to have appropriate insurance cover. AACs need to ensure that this insurance is in place in order to protect the learner and any participants they lead in sessions with that organisation.
