Grantham PhD Studentship: ‘Sustainable Diets and State Policy: Balancing the promotion of sustainable diets against individual and group freedoms’

This studentship will give an outstanding Masters graduate the opportunity to pursue doctoral research around sustainable diets, food ethics and the legitimate scope of state action.

While there is growing consensus that the increasing global adoption of the ‘Western’ diet raises serious ethical concerns, this PhD project is devoted to the more neglected political question of what can legitimately be done about them. Fundamentally, the project asks how the promotion of ‘sustainable diets’ ought to be balanced against individual and group freedom.

Your application for this studentship should be accompanied by a CV and a 200 word supporting statement. Your statement should outline your aspirations and motivation for studying in the Grantham Centre, outlining any relevant experience.

This studentship is tenable for four years from 1 October 2017 and will be based at the Department of Politics, University of Sheffield, under the principal supervision of Dr Alasdair Cochrane (Politics). Dr Chris Bennett (Philosophy) will support the project as an additional supervisor.

The studentship will cover the cost of home/EU or international rate tuition fees. Students will receive an annual stipend of £17,336, rising with inflation thereafter. Support for travel and consumables (RTSG) will also be made available at standard rate of £2,627 per annum, with an additional one-off allowance of £1,000 for a computer in the first year.

This four-year studentship would also encompass an extensive training programme, and opportunities for engagement with the public, policy-makers and industry, as part of the Grantham Scholars programme.
