Hello all,
It looks like you all were eager to dive back into numismatics after the break. Both meetings in January were very well attended. The juniors were especially active, working on their numismatic scrapbooks. This year is definitely off to a good start.
At the moment I’m preparing for a speech (on coins of course) for my speech class. Talking to the other students in the class I became aware that despite the success of the State Quarter program, coins still don’t mean much to the average person today. Inflation has rendered coins so useless in commerce that most people just chuck their change into a jar without a second thought. My goal in the speech is to introduce my classmates to the historical and artistic value of the coins that fascinate us. Though the monetary value of coins has been eroded, they retain their ability to transport us to other times and places, in a way no other collectible can. As numismatists we should take any opportunity to educate our less enlightened brethren about the hidden wonders of pocket change.
And while you’re educating, you could maybe… Sell raffle tickets! (You saw that one coming). Yes, raffle tickets for our coin show are available now. Don’t have any yet? Just ask Barbara Tandy to back up the truck. With the economy no longer in free-fall I think we can out-do last year’s sales, and the best way to do that is to get an early start. That will give you the most time to take advantage of the two incentives we’re doing this year. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have brethren to enlighten.

Members wanting to receive the club’s newsletter by email instead of by USPS need to see Mike Tandy. This change in distribution would save the club approximately $1.00 for every newsletter sent by email versus USPS. Note: For security, your email address will not be visible to othermembers receiving the newsletter.

Dues for 2010 are now due and payable. Your prompt payment will be appreciated. Dues remain at $12.00 for adults and $6.00 for juniors under 18 years of age. See Lloyd Solomon at the meetings or send your check to SCCC, P.O. Box 1672, Modesto, CA 95353.
Contest to Rename Last Draw
Due to some changes in the format at general meetings, the last draw for silver will be held before the auction. This will allow members not interested in the auction to leave early, particularly junior members on school nights. Due to these changes, it was decided to rename the last draw for silver. A contest will be held with the winning entry receiving a silver round. Members can submit a written entry to John Boswell (only one per member) at either of the meetings in February. During the board meeting in March, the board will review the entries and select their top 3. A vote to determine the winner will be held at the first meeting in March. Good Luck!

Coin Show Raffle Tickets
Raffle tickets for our 2010 Coin Show are now available. See Barbara Tandy at the meetings to get yours. Remember no address labels/stickers on ticket stubs. Prizes this year will be 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz US Gold Coins, a GSA Carson City Morgan Dollar and 20 Silver American Eagles. Incentives this year include 5 free raffle tickets for every 50 tickets sold and a book of 10 tickets for $9. Remember this is the club’s biggest money maker which funds all of our activities for the year, so sell those tickets.

The 2010 club medals (3 coin set) will cost $40.00 this year. See Hal DeBoardor Lloyd Solomon at the meetings or send your check to SCCC, P.O. Box 1672, Modesto, CA 95353 to reserve your medal(s). Don’t forget to include $7.50 for shipping if you want the medals mailed to you.

Junior Scrapbook
During our brake at regular SCCC Meetings all junior members will have the opportunity to make a coin scrapbook. This Coin Scrapbook will consist of the month’s coin and the history of why the coin was designed. For example, this month’s coin was the 2010 Sacagawea dollar which on the reverse depicts five arrows bundled together which represents strength in unity. These Coin Scrapbooks will be used at our junior table during our upcoming coin show for juniors to demonstrate to the public what they have learned during our club meetings about coins. After all we are a learning club. The club thanks Marcia SoriaDolly Sauls for organizing this informative junior program. Great job!

Coin Show Business: Incentive prices for this year’s raffle ticket sales are: a book of 10 tickets cost $9 & 5 free tickets for every 50 sold. The club is asking for volunteersto assist the Show Chair (Lloyd Solomon) and Bourse Chair (Mike Tandy)for our show.

New Business: A motion was made by Joan Alvarez to have an auction at each general meeting, except at the December meeting, the junior auction meeting in October and when we have a guest speaker. Motion was seconded by Mike Tandy and carried with 25 yes votes to 6 no votes. Another motion was made by Gary Kailes to have the last draw for silver before the auction. Motion was seconded and carried by a vote of 20 yes votes to 11 no votes. Since the last draw is now being held before the end of the meeting, it was decided to hold a contest to rename the last draw. A contest will be held with the winning entry receiving a silver round. Members can submit a written entry to John Boswell (only one per member) at either of the meetings in February. During the board meeting in March, the board will review the entries and select their top 3. A vote to determine the winner will be held at the first meeting in March. Good Luck!
