Course summary: This course will teach students the basics of writing, reading and speaking Hindi. The textbook will be supplemented by web material, movie clips and songs, which will assist students in mastering every day conversations and provide students with cultural context.

Prerequisites/placement: Beginning Hindi 10a or proficiency in reading and writing Devanagari and speaking basic sentences in Hindi.

Requirements and Expectations: Class sessions and assignments will include regular written homework, listening exercise in and out of class, weekly quizzes, dictations and skits built around the reading and grammatical concepts. Students will receive a new vocabulary list every week, and will practice incorporating new words into their conversations on a regular basis. A two volume CD set of “Teach Yourself Hindi” will also be used for listening material.

Throughout the course, students will learn about the main festivals and culture of the Hindi-speaking community in India. We will listen and watch songs, practice every day conversations and watch movie clips.

Attendance: Attendance is required. More than three absences will influence the final grade. Students are required to inform the instructor beforehand about absences and are responsible for getting up-to-speed on any material covered and homework distributed for all missed classes.

Grading policy:

Grades will be based on the following:

  • Attendance and class participation: 30%
  • Daily written and homework assignments: 30%
  • Quizzes: 10%
  • Tests (mid-term and final): 30% (each test will account for 15%)

Grading scale for tests and quizzes:

  • 94-100: A
  • 90-93: A-
  • 87-89: B+
  • 84-86: B
  • 80-83: B-
  • 77-79: C+
  • 74-76: C
  • 70-73: C-
  • 67-69: D+
  • 64-66: D
  • Below 64 is F
