Job Description

Job Title:Building Maintenance Person

Reports to:Clerk of Works (COW)

Hours of work:40 hours per week, Monday to Friday

7.30am – 4.00pm with half hour unpaid lunch break

Purpose:General building work including reactive repairs, refurbishment projects and improvement works on the estate buildings, cottages, farms and main house. Work including, but no exclusive to, cottage refurbishments, roof repairs, chimney rebuilds and repairs, lime pointing, timber repairs, general maintenance work, safety inspections, labouring, general yard and vehicle up keeping duties and providing a support service to other departments across the estate.

Key Deliverables

1.All aspects of building maintenance and repairs on the Castle and Estate Properties.

2.Work on projects including refurbishment contracts and occasional new build projects.

3.Support other departments in delivering works required for the business to develop.

4.Take responsibility for quality and progress of own work and direct any support staff allocated to assist as necessary.

5.As part of the Building Services Team, ensure the works yard, vehicles and stores are kept clean, tidy and in good order.

6.Contribute to identifying solutions to problems as part of the Building Services Team.

7.Endeavour to carry out tasks as efficiently as possible and minimise wastage of materials and labour.

8.Work in a methodical way, ensuring the customer is informed and ensure all areas affected by work activities are appropriately protected and left in a clean and tidy condition on completion.

9.Carry out other building operations, tasks and activities as instructed by the Building Services Manager as may be necessary from time to time.

10.Operate in accordance with Castle Howard’s Health and Safety Policy at all times:

-Follow safe working instructions at all times

-Use personal protective equipment

-Notify supervisor immediately of any danger that may be apparent during work activities

-Adhere to Estate hot works restriction and permissions at all times

11.Adhere to all Estate policies

12.Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required by the Building Services Manager and or Clerk of Works

Person Specification

  • General building labour skills with knowledge and experience of trades including roofing, brickwork, basic joinery and plumbing
  • Able to demonstrate a minimum of 2 years previous experience in building work, labouring or general handyman maintenance role
  • Flexible approach to duties undertaken, with ability to turn a hand to most maintenance tasks
  • Ability to work within a team or on own initiative as required
  • High standards of workmanship and appearance at all times
  • Sympathetic approach to working on listed and historic building
  • Responsible and accountable for own work
  • Effective communication, problem solving and organisational skills
  • Honesty, good time keeping and a high level of integrity
  • Enthusiasm and capacity for hard work
  • Attention to detail
  • Systematic and cheerful approach with a ‘can do’ attitude
  • Willing to undertake further training and up skilling when requested by BSM, with a desire to learn and further develop skills

Desirable

  • General building work or maintenance qualifications such as City and Guilds or NVQ Level 2-3
  • Trade background in joinery, brickwork and roofing
  • Knowledge of working with historic buildings and traditional building methods
