Midwest Technical Institute is proud to present the 2016 High School Welding Competition for junior and senior students in high schools and vocational training centers.

The annual welding competition strives to further an interest in welding amongst high school students and promote the value of a skills-based education in today’s competitive job market. Dates and locations for this year’s competitions are as follows:

Springfield, Illinois: April 15, 2016 – Flight A & B

East Peoria, Illinois: April 29, 2016 - Flight A & B

Quad Cities: April 7, 2016 – Flight B

Quad Cities: April 8, 2016 – Flight B

FLIGHTS

The competition will take place in two ‘flights’ or divisions, and the top three winners from each flight will receive trophies and cash prizes: $500 for a first place finish; $250 for a second place finish; and $100 for a third place finish. The top 10 winners from each flight will also receive a medal in recognition of their achievement.

Students competing in Flight A (Springfield and East Peoria only) will practice welding out of position (uphill, horizontal, overhead and flat) using a 6010 or equivalent rod. Flight A contestants will also use MIG and TIG welding processes.

Students competing in Flight B (Moline) must practice welding out of position (uphill, horizontal, overhead and flat) using a 7018 or equivalent rod with MIG. A written exam will also be given to Flight B contestants testing their basic welding knowledge.

SCHEDULE

Each competition will take place from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and include complimentary breakfast and lunch.

7 to 8 a.m.: Breakfast (provided at no cost) and registration.

8 to 9 a.m.: Introduction of welding staff, facilities and projects.

9 to 11 a.m.: Flight A begins welding. Flight B will begin the written exam and start the welding portion upon completing the exam.

11 to 11:45 a.m.: Lunch (provided at no cost).

11:45 a.m. to noon: Instructors will review and grade projects.

Noon to 12:30 p.m.: Awards presentation and pictures.

REGISTRATION

The competition is limited to junior and senior high school students only, and schools are asked to send no more than five students to participate in the competition. Family and friends are encouraged to attend the competition and the complimentary breakfast and lunch. All attendees will also have the opportunity to tour campus facilities during the competition.

Registration must be completed no later than one week (7 days) prior to each competition.
