American Society of Aerospace Medicine Specialists Meeting Minutes
May 12, 2005
The Meeting was called to order at 0730, Thursday 11 May 2005, Westin Hotel, Kansas City, Missouri by President Dave Rhodes
Approximately 50 members were in attendance.
STANDARD AGENDA:
- Secretary’s Report: None as of 17 May 2001 to report
- Treasurer‘s Report: Delivered by Dr Stephen Veronneau.
Expenses: Mar 2005 - $74.97 for domain name 3-year renewal; May 2004 - $65 for ASAMS PO Box rental; and Aug 2004 - $95.4 for ASAMS website registration
Statement of account as of 31 March 2005: We are in good standing with funds the black at $4965.21. Dues were being taken intermittently in the past since expenses were fixed and relatively low. Membership and dues lists were updated by members presiding at the 12 May 2005 meeting.
Dues were established at $10 per year for members in good standing with AsMA.
$5 for Student Residents
OLD BUSINESS:
1. Prior to the meeting and official voting by quorum, new officers were nominated and elected via secret ballot.
President – 1-year term, Dr Dave Rhodes
Vice President – 1-year term then to continue as president the following year, Dr Romie Richardson
Secretary – 2-year term, Dr Paul Young
Treasurer – 2-year term, Dr Stephen Veronneau
- Drs. Silberman and Rhodes mentioned that the ASAMS website is up and running and that individuals can renew their membership on-line. . Annual dues are $10.
- Panel sponsored this year for ASAMS: Health Service Inspection 2004 findings. For next year the group offered to sponsor panels on ADHD issues; Health Services Inspection 2005 Findings; and Maintenance of Certification, Clinical Practice Guidelines, and advertisement of ASAMS’ Purpose and Activities.
- Discussions of AsMA’s Nomination Committee activities were given by Dr Susan Northrup. She has agreed to continue to work on this as our representative
NEW BUSINESS:
- Updating the definition of what an Aerospace Medicine Specialist is was discussed. (Opt to task the Aerospace Medicine Practice Standards and Certification Committees for this)
- We need a member on the AsMA Education and training Committee. The Vice President has been tasked with representing ASAMS on it. (OPEN – VP Dr.Richardson)
- The viability of the ASAMS was discussed to reestablish its basis/organization before taking on taskings by AsMA. (INFO)
- We need new “blood” and to encourage membership. (INFO)
- We need more advertisement and publicity about our organization. (INFO)
- Jim Natler sits on the Board for MOC. There was interest expressed to have ASAMS responsible for AsMA MOC. (INFO - Referred to New Business)
- There was a motion place to have a lifetime membership for ASAMS.
- The item was tabled and referred to the Constitution and By Laws Committee for next year’s meeting – (POC Dr Laub – Committee Chair, Constitution and By Laws)
- Dr. Susan Northrup discussed the Maintenance of Certification panel processes and how the American Board of Preventive Medicine approves the various subjects presented. She asked ASAMS to gain AsMA’s support in improving the MOC structure. (INFO)
- A motion was placed on the floor and approved by the group for the following: ASAMS has requested to have, through AsMA concurrence, that a request be made to the ABPM that ASAMS have the authority to certify sessions for MOC approval. The formal letter will be drafted up by the ASAMS president. (OPEN - Dr Rhodes)
- The Organization was given suggestions on obtaining CME for journal articles. The Aerospace Medicine Practice Standards and Certification Committees will look into this issue. (OPEN - Aerospace Medicine Practice Standards and Certification Committees)
- No newsletter has been available for 4 years. This will be looked into by the ASAMS Officer Staff. (INFO)
- There was discussion on keeping the newsletter as an electronic publication. Dr Rob Carroll will continue compiling info and being the publisher. (POC Dr Rob Carroll)
- A motion was placed on the floor that the Membership Committee contact the certified Diplomats from the past 5 years and work out membership issues for ASAMS. Seconded and Approved by majority vote. (OPEN – Membership Committee)
- The possibility of having the ASAMS meeting as an AsMA Luncheon on a Thursday or the initial Sunday was brought up. (INFO – AsMA Scheduling Function)
