TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
The terms and conditions applicable to this post are those of all NHS Employees.
1. Superannuation
You have the option to join the NHS Superannuation Scheme, to participate in the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme or to take out a Personal Pension.
Employee’s contributions to the NHS Scheme amount to 5.2% to 14.7% of salary (depending on rate of Pensionable Pay) and the employers’ contribution equates to 13.5% of salary. Employees in the NHS Scheme are “Contracted-out” of the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme and pay a lower rate of National Insurance contributions. Employees who choose to participate in the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme pay the higher rate of National Insurance contribution. A Stakeholder Pension is also available.

2. JOB PURPOSE
The post holder will have responsibility for the delivery of direct and indirect care and associated data collection for a number of research projects undertaken by the Orthopaedic research group in accordance with the Research Governance Framework and the International Conference on Harmonisation Good Clinical Practice Guidelines (ICH-GCP).The post holder will ensure the highest standard of care is delivered to research participants and their families in partnership with all members of the multidisciplinary and research teams.
The post holder has responsibility and accountability for maintaining both clinical, staff and research governance.
The post holder will be involved in developing project specific policies and procedures within their team.
3. DIMENSIONS
The Golden Jubilee National Hospital (GJNH) is part of the NHS National Waiting Times Centre Board - an NHS Special Health Board in Scotland which also includes the Golden Jubilee Research Institute (where this post is based) and the Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel.
The GJNH has the following clinical remits:
· Receiving referrals to reduce patient waiting times in key elective specialties;
· GJNH is a major centre for orthopaedics; and
· Has a responsibility for a range of regional and national heart and lung services.
Most clinical areas within the GJNH are research active. The current contract value of commercial research is over £1 million and the Board is in receipt of approximately £300 000 of core funding from the Chief Scientist Office. At any one point in time there are approximately 80 clinical research projects either actively recruiting or in the follow-up phase.
4. ORGANISATIONAL POSITION
5. ROLE OF DEPARTMENT
The Golden Jubilee Research Institute is led by the Research & Development Manager and is part of the Corporate Directorate of the Golden Jubilee National Hospital. It is responsible to the Executive Lead for Research & Development. It provides a service to facilitate and co-ordinate activities to implement the Golden Jubilee Research Strategy and to underpin research governance in order to deliver high quality, effective research throughout the hospital.6.0 Scope and Range of Responsibilities
6.1 Clinical
All responsibilities relate to work within the Orthopaedic research group.· Organise own workload to ensure that the interests of research participants are met.
· Have a working knowledge of each research protocol, protocol procedures and protocol documentation.
· Participate in accurate and timely data collection including physiological, demographic and pharmacokinetic data.
· Where relevant, ensure medication and treatment is administered safely and according to the protocol. Report any clinical outcomes, as appropriate, to the Principal Investigator.
· Monitor treatment effects / side effects and initiate changes to treatment as required by the protocol.
· Provide ongoing guidance, support and information for patients (and their families) to enhance their understanding of the specific research study.
· Maintain accurate documentation of all research activities performed / patient events in nursing / medical notes and accurately document data collected into the case report forms.
· Communicate with other clinicians, including General Practitioners and hospital consultants, on participation of patients in research projects.
· Maintain the highest standards of nursing and follow up care appropriate to the participant’s health needs.
6.2 Research
· Gain knowledge of each research protocol including procedures and documentation to ensure the safe and accurate conduct of the study.
· Identify, screen and recruit participants into research studies according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and where necessary, facilitate a participant’s withdrawal from a study.
· Identify barriers to recruitment for studies and work with colleagues to implement strategies to overcome these.
· Facilitate the process of informed consent by providing ongoing advice and information to potential participants, and where indicated in a protocol, and where the protocol is of low risk, obtain written consent on behalf of the Principal Investigator.
· In collaboration with colleagues, develop and utilise study specific documentation to ensure that data is recorded accurately and in accordance with regulatory requirements.
· Ensure processing and storage of biological samples meets research protocol requirements so that safe handling and quality is assured.
· Participate in clinical trial monitoring internally and externally as required in order to meet the governance requirements of each study.
· Contribute to the development of study related procedures.
· Ensure that studies are undertaken in accordance with the terms approved by the Research Ethics Committee and the Golden Jubilee Research & Development (R&D) Office.
· Be responsible for reporting adverse events in a timely and effective manner at local level and escalate as per project specific requirements.
· Liaise with the members of the multidisciplinary teams and other hospital departments to establish procedures for the safe and smooth running of research studies.
· Actively contribute to the long-term goals and development of the Orthopaedic Research team.
6.3 Administration
· Assist colleagues as required in processes relating to Integrated Research Application System (IRAS), Ethics and R&D applications and approvals.
· Support colleagues in completing study feasibilities, study costs, the approvals process and ongoing study administration.
· As delegated by senior colleagues, ensure that research study site files and patient files are accurately maintained.
6.4 Education and Training
· Demonstrate a commitment to personal continuing professional development and actively participate in performance review and appraisal.
· Undertake additional training in order to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to implement new study protocols.
· Ensure that all relevant health care professionals are supported as required to enable them to care for research study participants.
· Maintain an awareness of current advances in research and nursing practice and use this knowledge to maintain the highest standard of care for patients in research studies.
· Develop and maintain links with research nurses and clinical nurse specialists locally and nationally to share knowledge and best practice.
· Contribute to the Golden Jubilee Research Institute events that promote awareness of clinical research.
