Steps to get your Macintosh Working on the Kellogg Network
This document is meant to get a new Mac owner up and running on the Kellogg Network. It contains information on:
1. Setting up your Kellogg Mail within Apple Mail
2. Setting up Microsoft Entourage 2008
3. Mapping Network Drives
4. Connecting to Kellogg Printers
5. Setting up your iPhone
Beyond these steps, it is helpful to have the following:
- Download and install the Mac compatible VPN here:
- Purchase Office 2008 for Mac here (remember to use your student discount!):
- Although Boot Camp is one way to run Windows on your Mac, there are two options to run Windows XP or Vista concurrently: Parallels and VM Ware.
Setting up Apple Mail to work with Kellogg email:
1. Set up a new exchange account in Mail, using the settings below (and inserting your own ID for user name, of course):
2. Click on the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" dropdown and choose "Edit Server list."
3. Click on the plus sign and gave your new outgoing server whatever name you want. Then, insert "hecky.it.northwestern.edu" in the server name box. I have a feeling you could also use LuLu, or Merle, or whatever server you want.
4. Click OK.
5. Now, here's the important part. This works without any other changes if you are on campus, using Northwestern's wireless network. If you are off-campus, you need to be logged into the VPN.
Setting up Microsoft Entourage 2008:
1. Go to File -> Account Settings -> New Mail Server
2. Set up an Exchange account with all your info. The Domain =
Kellogg, and the Exchange Server = webmail.kellogg.northwestern.edu
Here's a picture of what it should look like:
3. Next, in the "Accounts" window, click on Directory Service. (Yours should not have anything in the window) and click New -> Directory Service.
4. On the "Account Settings" tab, give your LDAP a name in the Account Name field, and type in "directory.northwestern.edu" for the LDAP server. Leave everything else blank.
5. On the "Options" tab, enter in the Search base field "dc=northwestern,dc=edu". Also, put the max search results to "100".
6. Click OK.
You should be ready to go!
Mapping Network Drives:
1. Make sure you have Leopard. Tiger can't connect to Kellogg network drives.
2. In Finder, choose Go->Connect to Server. Or, use Command-K.
3. Connect to smb://kis-nt2/docs (personal folder) or smb://ksmc01/kellogg-id (web directory) where kellogg-id is like mkn129.
Connecting to Kellogg Printers:
1. Open up the "Printer Setup Utility” while on the Kellogg Network (wired or wireless).
2. Once you have the utility open, click on the "Add" button.
3. Once the next window opens, click "IP Printer"
4. Change the "Protocol" drop down menu to "Internet Printing Protocol - IPP"
5. In the "Address" box type the printer address. It's a 4-part numerical address that you can find on each printer’s menu. Here are some common ones:
· Jacobs157EastLeft – 129.105.196.44
· Jacobs157East Right – 129.105.196.43
· Jacobs157WestRight – 129.105.196.45
· Jacobs157WestLeft – 129.105.196.46
· JacobsBasement #1 - 129.105.196.39
· JacobsBasement #2 - 129.105.196.35
· JacobsBasement #3 - 129.105.196.32
· JacobsBasement #4 - 129.105.196.33
· Jacobs2218Left - 129.105.200.80
· Jacobs2218Right - 129.105.200.85
6. Change the "Name" box to a descriptive name "e.g. Jacobs Room 2218 Printer #1". It's up to you if you want to add a "Location" into the location box. You can leave it blank.
7. Leave the "Queue" box blank.
8. Once you've entered in the address, the "Print Using" should change to the appropriate printer type. This should match the title in boldfor each printer in the list. e.g. "HP LaserJet 8150 Series."
9. Once you've done this, click the "Add" button. That will add the printer. You should be able to print...I would try sending a sample page to make certain the printer is working.
10. Repeat for all the printers on the list.
11. Make sure to add a cover page by toggling the “Cover page” drop down on the print screen.
