Conduct & Sportsmanship Rating Policy

* Flag Football *

I. Each team, in each game, will be given a sportsmanship rating by each referee calling the game. The maximum number of rating points a team can attain each game is four (4) points. The points will be totaled at the end of the season and divided by the number of games played (total points/# of games played). Teams which play in a league with an odd number of teams requiring teams to have a bye week will be averaged based on the number of games they actually play, not the number of weeks in the season.

Example 1: Team A gets the following ratings for all the contests they play: 4, 3, 3, 4, 4. Team A has played 5 games, therefore 18 / 5 = 3.6.

Example 2: Team B receives the following sportsmanship ratings: 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, and they have also played 5 games, therefore, 14 / 5 = 2.8.

Points will be posted on the Intramural Bulletin Board alongside the record of each team.

A. Forfeit Guidelines: For each forfeit received because the other team failed to show up at the scheduled time, an automatic four (4) rating will be assessed to the team who did show up. There will be no rating given to the team who forfeits, and therefore the total number of games will be reduced for each forfeited game. (Example: Team A forfeits 1 game and should have played a total of 5. This team will only be counted as playing 4 games)

B. Conceding a contest is actually forfeiting ahead of time, therefore all forfeit guidelines

will be enforced for any conceded games.

II. General description of each rating and the behavior that is expected of all players, coaches, and spectators.

Rating Description

4 Excellent Conduct and Sportsmanship: Players fully cooperate with all Intramural officials and other team members. The captain calmly converses with the officials about rule interpretations and calls. The captain has full control of their teammates, fans, and bench throughout the contest.

3 Average Conduct and Sportsmanship: Team members verbally complain about some decisions made by the officials and/or show minor dissension. The captain is mostly in control of their teammates, fans, and bench throughout the contest.

2 Below Average Conduct and Sportsmanship: Team members show verbal dissent (yelling, questioning constantly, fans yelling, etc.) toward officials and/or opposing team members from the field and/or sidelines. The team captain exhibits minor control over their teammates and fans, but is still in control of him/her self. A team which receives more than one (1) unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, or one (1) ejection will receive no higher than a two (2) rating. Ejected players may also have other penalties imposed which are explained in detail on the Intramural Participant’s Responsibilities sheet.

1 Poor Conduct and Sportsmanship: Teams constantly comment to the officials and/or opposing team from the field and/or sidelines. The team captain exhibits little control over their teammates, fans, or themselves. A team which receives one ejection may receive a one (1) rating. Ejected players may also have other penalties imposed which are explained in detail on the Intramural Participant’s Responsibilities sheet.

0 Totally Unacceptable Conduct and Sportsmanship: The team is completely uncooperative. Captain has no control over teammates, fans, or themselves. Any team causing a game to be forfeited, other than by not showing up to play, or receives more than one (1) ejection shall receive a zero (0) rating.

A team that receives a zero (0) rating must have their captain meet with the Assistant

Coordinator of Intramurals & Sport Clubs to determine the eligibility status of their team.

The team will not be allowed to participate and will forfeit each contest until they meet with the Assistant Coordinator.

III. In order for teams to be eligible for playoffs (post season tournament) or any tie-breaker

procedures each team must have:

A. An average minimum conduct & sportsmanship rating of 3.0 at the conclusion

of the regular season.

B. Not forfeited out of the regular season (two forfeits).

IV. A player will not be eligible to participate in his/her team’s next contest for the following:

A. Ejected from a game.

V. Teams playing in the playoffs must meet the following criteria:

1. Maintain a minimum rating average of 3.0.

The Intramural Sports staff realizes that flag football is a very judgmental sport to referee. In referee training clinics, the Intramural staff will explain to referees that questions asked in a rational manner are acceptable. Constant complaints and/or negative comments are not considered acceptable. Referees will be trained on how to handle situations if they feel they are getting out of hand. Captains will be warned by the referee or the supervisor on duty (if available) if they feel the team or fans are getting out of hand. Once this warning has been given, teams should realize their sportsmanship rating may be lowered if this conduct continues. It is the captain’s responsibility to alert his/her team and/or fans that the warning has been given.

Intramural Sports reserves the right to make revisions or amend this rating policy at any time without notice.
