Administration

1. Water is available on site. Bring your own containers and transportation to get it from the hose to your site

2. All fires must be in containers built above ground so that no scaring of the grass happens. Bring your own wood. Completely cold and wet ashes may be placed at the tree line.

3. Campsites will be allocated based on the size of your unit and the event you support.

4. All parking will be perpendicular to the entrance road and not in any site.

5. Porta johns will be available.

6. All trash must be carried out.

7. Leave the camping area in as good or better condition than you found it.

SIXEVENTS

These six events could include the material described under each event, but will be determined by the person running the event. The goal of the event is to give a Scout the basic knowledge to understand and gain some home maintenance and improvement skills.

1. Electricity (Troop 264)

  • Understand how to complete an electrical home safety inspection of your home, using the checklist found in the MB pamphlet or one approved by your counselor.
  • Explain the difference between direct current and alternating current.
  • Make a simple drawing to show how a battery and an electric bell work.
  • Learn how to identify the main breaker box for your house.
  • Learn how to check to make sure power is off
  • Explain why a fuse blows or a circuit breaker trips. Tell how to find a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker in your home. Show how to safely reset the circuit breaker.
  • Connect a buzzer, bell, or light with a battery. Have a key or switch in the line.
  • Build a single-pole, double-throw switch. Show that it works.
  • Replace an electrical cord or repair a plug or lamp socket.
  • Replace an electrical wall outlet/ switch.

2. Plumbing <NEED A TROOP>

  • Repair a leaky water faucet.
  • Repair a flush toilet.
  • Toilet – check for leaks; replace flapper; replace float; unstop a stopped up toilet
  • Drains – maintenance; stopped up; Clear a clogged drain or trap.
  • Repair a leaky hose or connector.
  • PVC – show how to cut and glue PVC piping; show different elbow/parts needed to run a freshwater line and drain.
  • Locate & operate the main shutoff valve for house (inside & at the street)
  • How to keep your pipes from freezing

3. Carpentry& Two Competitions (Troop 1441)

  • appropriate things from this site
  • How to measure and saw a board with a hand saw
  • Nail sizes
  • Screws sizes
  • Nails vs Screws
  • Joints / Connections for walls, roofs; decks
  • COMPETITION: NAIL DRIVING –Using a standard hammer swing and proper safety procedures for nailing, count the number of hammer strikes to hammer a 10-penny nail through a 2x4
  • COMPETITION: SAWING – Using a hand saw and proper safety procedures time the amount of time it takes to do a straight cut on a 2x4

4. Drywall and Painting (Troop 1444)

  • Dry wall – layout, cut, patch, sand
  • How to paint: paint selection – types of paint; methods to paint: spray; rollers; brushes
  • Prepare material (wall/ furniture) for painting
  • Cleanup: room; brushes; rollers; disposal or storage of paint

5. Blacksmith (Troop 264)

  • Details to be provided

6. Welding (Troop 264)

  • Details to be provided

FOUR OVERALL COMPETITIONS

A Working ManzzGotta Eat Competitions

  • Competition may be at the TROOP or PATROL level – Each Troop will make that decision on their own.
  • The “chef” will be a Scout or scout team; may be supervised by an adult, but the adult may not actively participate.
  • The Chef will decide on what he thinks will be the best ingredients & presentation. Judges will make their decisions based in presentation and taste.

DessertBest Baked Cake (1 cake from scratch –provide a copy of the recipe too).

A “primitive” baking method must be used (box oven or Dutch oven for example). Charcoal or wood fired ovens only – NO propane)
