(Due to time conflict, it wasn’t possible to the RIGW research group to attend the meeting in Cyprus. The RIGW research group was later informed by the coordinator about issuee considered, actions taken and decisions made in Cyprus)

Meeting and Workshop Activities

Activities for the II Coordination Meeting focused on discussing:

the preliminary results of the project;

the detailed guidelines for WP3 (ANNEX 2);

general guidelines for the other Work Packages;

the issues related to the technical report for the first year of activities;

the issues related to the report for the first year of activities;

the issues related to the cost statements for the first year of activities;

The desalination plant at Dhekelia in Cyprus was visited as part of the activities for the WAM-ME II meeting.

The I Workshop focused on presenting Experiences and Perspectives in Water Resources Management in Mediterranean Countries under Drought Conditions. Specifically, the reports prepared by each country participating to WAM-ME were presented as well as:

an overview of Drought management in Mediterranean countries, presented by Prof. Marcello Benedini, Department of National Technical Services, Italy

a paper related to Experiences in facing droughts at a river basin level, presented by prof. Joaquin Andreu (on behalf of Dr. Javier Ferrer, Planning Office of the Jucar Basin Agency, Spain)

a paper related to Wastewater reuse experiences in Sardinia: the end-user perspective, presented by Paolo Botti, Ente Flumendosa, Sardinia, Italy

The workshop was closed by a Round Table Session chaired by Prof. Benedini, during which participants had an occasion to openly discuss issues related to the workshop program and to associate the discussion to the WAM-ME future activities.

Delegates from the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Development Department of Cyprus attended the workshop.

Main decisions

The following decision were taken during the II WAM_ME meeting:

a mid-year meeting will take place in Rome on September 28-29 2001;

the III coordination meeting and the II Workshop will be held, as planned, in Cairo (Egypt) in Spring 2002 (Tentatively in March 25-31 2001). The role of groundwater in integrated water management under drought condition will be the theme of the Workshop.
