Paper Sculpture with Tubes
Grade: 4-5
Objective: Students will create paper sculpture while developing an understanding of the art elements Form and Space comparing ancient sculpture with modern sculpture.
Motivation and Demonstration:
1. Discuss the art element Form, Spaceand three dimensional art (having actual samples of geometric solids brings more clarity to discussion). While examining prints or actual examples of sculptural art, compare ancient sculpture and modern sculpture.
2. Demonstrate how to roll tubes, make coils, fringe, other constructing techniques, and the use of small glue dabs to hold paper together. The smaller amount of glue, the quicker it dries. (use pinkie to glue).
3.Explain the importance of negative space and 360˚ design.
Student Activity:
1.Roll three or four tubes using black, white and lined paper. (any colors will do)
2. Glue tubes to base (mat board) for support of additional details
3. Form coils, curl strips, build stands, etc.in creating a paper sculpture.
4. Make glue tabs and use small amounts of glue to attach to base. While attaching paper to paper, have students use pressure on glued area and count to about ten, this will keep frustrations to a minimum.
5. Sculpture must be interesting from every view point so work on all parts of the base to visually balance quickly and add details as you have time.(Don’t spend too much time in one area). The sculpture must be complete at the end of this lesson.
Supplies: white mat board for base 3”x4”, black and white lined paper from line grid lesson(students cut out rectangular shapes on grid and use as needed for tubes and other things), white and black paper 3”x 4”(students need 2 or three each for tubes and other things), rolling toolsfor tubes can be pencils, scissors (Point out safety tips with scissors for curling paper making sure scissors are closed completely)
*Of course, a variety of paper can be used for this lesson it does not have to be black white.
Vocabulary: Form, space, sculpture, three dimensional coil, roll, tube, fringe
Evaluation: Student observation with immediate correction when necessary to manage paper rolling and constructiontechniques and usage of glue. Share finished product if time allows. Display in available areas throughout school.
