Part I –Sentence work. (20 points – 20 minutes)

·  Write the sentence that you are to have memorized, Jim’s final statement to Huck in Chapter 15.

·  From five pairs of names from below, select two[1] and comment on the significance of each pair in the novel, revealing not only literal but also thematic significance.

Judith Loftus, the woman Huck meets when he temporarily escapes Jackson’s Island to determine what news there is about him and Jim, and Judge Thatcher, the wise townsman who saw the truth beneath Huck’s desire to give away his fortune, together represent a kindness that is possible ashore, kindness embodied in ideal mother and father figures, experience with whom Huck never had.

Part III –American Literature Essay (40 points – 40 minutes)

·  Explain what makes the literature we have studied particularly “American” ?

·  Successful essays will begin with a general introduction that precedes a clear and complex thesis. They will be built with paragraphs that develop a sequence of ideas, using specific examples from a variety of works to support the essay’s claims. As a minimum, you must use specific examples from a variety of authors, at least two references to your study of United States History, and one comment from a colleague.

·  You may bring into the exam one 3 x 5 card upon one side of which you may write outline notes for Part III.
