Étoile Academy Charter School, a new independent 5th-8th grade charter school in Houston, is seeking an ambitious, smart, and high-capacity individual to join our team as a Founding Teacher. Étoile Academy is founded on the belief that all students can learn and achieve at high levels when held to the highest expectations— regardless of their race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, zip code, or home language. We will ensure that every student in grades 5 through 8 has the academic and character foundation necessary to succeed in high school, graduate from college, and pursue ambitious life goals. Étoile Academy will open in August 2018 with students in grade 5, and will grow one grade level annually until fully enrolled with grades 5 through 8. Étoile Academy is proud to be serving the students and families in the Sharpstown and Gulfton communities of Houston.
Founding Science Teacher
Founding teachers are responsible for executing on the mission by ensuring that all students improve academically and demonstrate our core values. Founding teachers are responsible for providing high-quality, data-driven instruction and instructional support to all learners. They are responsible for collaborating with colleagues, including special education teachers, to ensure all students get the accommodations and modifications needed to master the standards. This is a full-time position teaching 5th grade science. We want our students to love science, to be curious about the world around them, and to learn primarily through experiments and field work.
Our FoundingScience Teacher will have the following key responsibilities.
- Internalizing curriculum, standards, and assessments to deliver and eventually create rigorous lessons aligned to state standards.
- Following schoolwide systems to provide unit plans and lesson plans to the School Director for review and feedback.
- Analyzing assessment data (formative, summative, interim) to refine lesson and unit plans, to provide supports to struggling students, and to adjust flexible groupings.
- Providing clear incentives and consequences to support students in reaching high expectations of behavior.
- Supporting students in mastering state standards, including providing targeted interventions and remediation when necessary.
- Actively participating in non-instructional school activities, including arrival, breakfast, break, lunch, and dismissal.
- Managing preparation time blocks to best improve instruction and impact student learning.
- Participating actively in weekly coaching and feedback sessions as well as weekly and monthly professional development.
- Participating in family engagement activities including home visits, family orientations, family conferences, and family workshops.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher required
- A minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred, but not required
- Measurable evidence of driving student achievement gains
- Willingness to spend extra time with students that have not demonstrated mastery on standards
- Valid Texas Teaching Licensure preferred, but not required
- Dual certification in Special Education or ESL preferred
- A commitment to working with underserved, urban youth
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with a diverse staff
- Open to feedback, desire to continue development as a professional and willingness to take responsibility for student outcomes and achievement

- Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish)
